31 October 2020.
The Republic of Georgia.
The Georgian Parliamentary Elections, 2020.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Republic of Georgia operates based on a unitary, parliamentary system, within the framework of the constitutional republic that has governed since the nation’s independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Politics is dominated by two major parties: Georgian Dream, an up-start party formed in 2012 by billionaire and Georgia’s richest man Bidzina Ivanishvili, and the United National Movement, founded in 2001 by eccentric Mikheil Saakashvili as a counterpart to the largely corrupt and failed government of the 90s and early 2000s. Georgian politics was formerly dominated by Eduard Shevardnadze, former leader of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic and Soviet Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1985 to 1991, who ruled via the apparatus of the Union of Citizens of Georgia, a catch-all center left party which he himself founded and intertwined with endemic corruption. Shevardnadze was peacefully overthrown by the Rose Revolution in 2003, in which mass protests, led by Mikheil Saakashvili and several others, saw him forced to retire; effectively preventing Georgia from falling to the same fate of many ex-Soviet nations and restoring true democracy. However, Shevardnadze’s legacy of strongman politics hasn’t entirely faded away— Georgian politics is primarily dominated by Ivanishvili and Saakashvili as a clash between the two titans, who campaign based on their own achievements and status rather than through party policy and merit as one might expect in Western nations. In many ways, the GD and UNM are more alike than different; with both operating as vehicles for their respective leaders (even if they aren’t necessarily in the running as candidates). Both are popular for different reasons, but even more popular still is the prospect of replacing both and transitioning Georgia into a more equitable political status quo, not dominated by the two powers-that-be.
PRELUDE
After months of campaigning, the long-awaited 2020 Georgian Parliamentary Elections (the fifth since the establishment of true democracy following the Rose Revolution of 2003) have arrived; and it is clear that it will be one for the history books. The ruling Georgian Dream party, a big-tent collection of conservatives, liberals and social democrats kept united only by the charisma and influence of their leader, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, have proved themselves to be deeply controversial in the eyes of the average Georgian— since their ousting of the formerly reigning United National Movement, and their eccentric President Mikheil Saakashvili, in 2012, the party has overseen the transition of Georgia into it’s modern state, including it’s push for modernity and integration with the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as well as transitioning Georgia into a more laissez faire economic model. It has, however, come under fire for several perceived transgressions, namely cronyism, authoritarian tendencies, including politically motivated charges against members of the opposition, increased friendliness and influence with Russia, and oligarchic sentiment (primarily as a result of Bidzina’s unrivalled wealth and vast influence in the party). All of this has culminated in an election race that will no doubt be close, and one that is underscored by tension across all levels of society. The future will be decided tonight.
OPINION POLLING, PRE-ELECTION
Opinion polling pre-election has, contrary to many other elections occurring concurrently (such as the United States Presidential Election), largely favoured the ruling party by a fair margin. The ruling Georgian Dream party, despite criticism on both sides of the political spectrum, has consistently commanded a 10-30% lead over their nearest rivals, the United National Movement, who, despite presiding over the Strength Is In Unity Coalition (combining the strength of several parliamentary parties in an effort to dethrone the GD) have failed to break past 25% polling support in over two years. This status quo has not come without tumult, however; a sizeable portion of the Georgian electorate only supports Georgian Dream out of fear of the opposition or due to lacking a viable third party, and with semi-regular protests voicing these opinions to the party, their public support has come to be perhaps the most fickle of any of the major parliamentary parties. By contrast, the UNM has drawn on their sizable diehard base for support, by picking now-legendary former president Mikheil “Misha” Saakashvili as their candidate for Prime Minister. Supporters of Saakashvili, who is famed for his hard pro-NATO stance, incredible economic growth (averaging 10% per year at it’s height), and tough crackdown on corruption, would gladly see the return of Misha to the forefront of Georgian politics, and this has helped carry UNM popular support back into the high teens and low twenties even as Georgian Dream continues to dominate, though detractors criticize the choice of Saakashvili as candidate, given his current criminal status, his current residency in Ukraine, and the authoritarian strong-man tendencies he showed in his later terms as President of Georgia.
Alongside the clash of the titans is a slew of minor parliamentary and extraparliamentary parties, all of which either decry the current state of two-party dominance, lend their support to one or the other, or do both at the same time. Among the minor parties, the UNM’s influence reigns supreme whether they like it or not; as the major party leading the Strength Is In Unity Coalition, which comprises 9 other minor parties (Serve Georgia, National Democratic Party, State for the People, European Democrats, Republican Party of Georgia, Christian Conservative Party, Civil Alliance for Freedom, Georgia Among Leaders, and For A New Georgia, most of which represent liberal center-right ideologies), the UNM is free to count on whatever seats they get, if any, as their own. Georgian Dream, for their part, are not without support themselves— the Green Party, who hold six seats in Parliament, as well as the Conservative Party of Georgia, who hold four, both lend their support to the Georgian Dream as part of the confusingly named Georgian Dream coalition currently ruling the country. Outside of these warring coalitions, Georgia’s minor parties are an eclectic mix of parliamentary and non-parliamentary. The largest non-coalition party in Parliament, the European Georgia party, holds a grand total of nineteen seats, largely stolen from the UNM following European Georgia and UNM’s split in 2017, and represent much of the same UNM ideology. They are joined by no less than twelve independents and the Alliance of Patriots of Georgia, a right-wing, pro-Russia, nationalistic party, who represents the second largest party outside of a coalition, with seven seats to their name. Outside of these are minor parties who occupy the fringe of Georgian politics; Libertarians, Communists, Social Democrats and more, most of which have no seats or lost the seats they held following the previous election.
Whether the minor parties will play a decisive role in the results of the election remains to be seen, but many expect that they will only serve to split the UNM vote and consolidate the Georgian Dream’s grip on power.
Opinion polls held by local Georgian media on October 30th, 2020, reveal popular support is drawn along the following lines:
Party % Support Expected Seats
Georgian Dream (Incumbent) 45% 105-130
United National Movement 21% 20-37
European Georgia 10% 7-24
Alliance of Patriots of Georgia 6% 2-8
Other 18% 10-28
RESULTS
And, in a turn of events that surprised literally no one, Georgian Dream under Leader Bidzina Ivanishvili and Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia have had their mandate re-confirmed by the Georgian voting populace, with a large margin between them and their nearest competitor cementing their domination. UNM candidate Saakashvili has, despite early objections and calls for a recount, conceded the victory- although it is clear he is not out of the game yet, and experts agree the UNM will no doubt return in full force for 2024. All in all, both parties have done rather well, relatively, with Georgian Dream capturing the fabled 100+ seat count (and thus an overwhelming majority) and UNM mostly recovering their losses following the split with European Georgia.
The Parliament of Georgia is now laid out as follows:
Party Seats
Georgian Dream 103
UNM 27
European Georgia 8
APG 4
Other 8

2020.09.18 21:16 littlepinkllama [INTRO] Hello, Friends!

My name is Rachael, and I'm from the frozen wilds of northern Ohio-for real, if it weren't for the fact that the local food is kinda horrible, we'd just be south Michigan. I work retail, but actually like my job most of the time. I have two special needs kitties; Loki has no teeth, and Phoebe... is Phoebe. She was being used in a kitty mill sort of situation, and has all sorts of issues. She's also a Siberian, with all the fun that includes, and Loki's family tree is a telephone pole.
I'm thirty-six, queer as hell, and used to be one of those crazy outdoorsy horse girls... and then I got sick, and all of my pastimes have taken on a seriously sedentary bent. But so has everyone else's, so its all good, right? Right. I'm teaching myself to sew, and cook, and want to take on embroidery, knitting, and calligraphy at some point. I continue to hold out hope that I'll be able to take up backpacking, camping, and riding, again, too. I collect, repair, and customize 18 inch dolls and Breyer models, and do some flint knapping for funsies. Mostly because I'm awful at it. I also study American Sign Language, again, very badly. And take care of a Little Free Library. Yes, yes I do have ADHD, and yes, I very rarely do one thing at a time.
I'm ridiculously into history, especially the Georgian/Victorian/Edwardian time frame, as well as new world pre-columbian. I desperately want to get into the SCA, but the nearest group is over an hour away and that is... less than awesome. So I try to learn what I can on my own, and maybe I'll get there someday. I'm into all the usual fandom big names: Supernatural, Witcher, Teen Wolf, Doctor Who, and so on, but I have a not-so-secret burning love for Sailor Moon and the Disney Princesses, too.
I was just starting the process of converting to Judaism when COVID did The Thing (and my girlfriend was teaching ESL in Japan-thankfully she got rehired when her time was up!) and I'd really love to see it get kicked in the metaphorical teeth, cause this year of living in liminal space has been all sorts of weird and brain breaking.

2020.09.18 13:09 PiggySVW 14 currently active Munich-born footballers have received a call up to a national team. None of those was from Germany. Here are their stories.

While searching some stuff on Transfermarkt, I discovered that there are 14 currently active football players who were born in Munich and have been called up for at least one senior national team fixture. Funnily, not a single one of those 14 players was called up to the German Nationalmannschaft. I decided to take a closer look at their respective careers. There are some more obvious paths like Germans of Turkish descent who went on to play in and for Turkey but also some pretty obscure careers. I begin with the most capped player and work my way down the list to the players who only got a call up without getting any game time. I sincerely hope you enjoy this read, it was pretty fun to write down!

Fabian Johnson

Age: 32
Position: Left Winger
Current team: -
National team: USA (57 matches, 2 goals)
The most-capped player in this list is American international Fabian Johnson. He was born in 1987 in München-Giesing and started his footballing career playing for Sportfreunde München before making the switch to 1860 where he spent 13 years. In 2009, he began his career in the 1. Bundesliga with Wolfsburg. Until today he made over 200 appearances in Germany's top flight for the Wolves, Hoffenheim and Gladbach. Currently he's without a club as Borussia didn't want to extend his contract.
The defensive-minded winger played for all the DFB youth teams and even won the under-21 Euros in 2009 alongside players like Mesut Özil, Mats Hummels or Manuel Neuer. However, Johnson - son of a German mother and an American father - stated that he "always felt quite American", so it's no wonder that he accepted the invitation when USMNT coach Jürgen Klinsmann called him up to the US squad in 2011. Since then he participated in the World Cup 2014, the Copa América 2016 and several Gold Cups. His last international game to date was in September 2017.

Manuel Ott

Age: 28
Position: Central Midfielder
Current team: United City F.C.
National team: Philippines (51 matches, 4 goals)
"Manny" Ott also represented 1860 München during his youth career before eventually ending up at FC Ingolstadt's academy in 2009. He spent five year's in the Audi city before going to his mother's home country to play for Ceres-La Salle FC, who are now called United City F.C. He won several titles with the Filipino powerhouse and in fact returned to them in February 2020 after a wasted year in Thailand where he only managed to play one single game for Ratchaburi Mitr Phol F.C. due to a tibia fracture.
Ott played his first senior game for the Philippines on 16 January 2010 at only 17 years of age. A scout had been sent out to find players in Europe who are eligible for the Filipino team. The midfielder's first goal followed in a 3-0 win over Cambodia in 2014.

Mike Ott

Age: 25
Position: Attacking Midfielder
Current team: United City F.C.
National team: Philippines (21 matches, 3 goals)
Another one? Yes! Mike Ott followed his big brother's footsteps and also graduated from 1860's youth system before joining Nürnberg in 2014. He was unable to impress in the first team and instead played for Nürnberg's under-23 team in the fourth tier. After three seasons, he decided to start on an adventure in Asia instead, so he made the switch to Angthong F.C. in Thai League 2. He had a decent stint in Thailand which made his brother's club Ceres offer him a contract in 2018. The new owners changed the team's name but re-signed both brothers in this summer. What are the Otts?
Mike was part of the Filipino national team for the first time in 2013 but didn't get to enter the pitch. His debut actually only came in October 2016 against Bahrain and he even scored the goal in his team's 1:3 loss.

Mehmet Ekici

Age: 30
Position: Attacking Midfielder
Current team: -
National team: Turkey (12 matches, 0 goals)
"Memo" Ekici began playing football for former Bundesliga outfit SpVgg Unterhaching, but he quickly became a member of FC Bayern's youth system. He made it onto Bayern's bench in 2009/10 but never played a minute for Bayern's senior squad. For the following season he was loaned out to fellow Bundesliga team Nürnberg where the young talent impressed alongside fellow German Turk Ilkay Gündogan. While the latter was bought by Borussia Dortmund, Ekici went to Werder Bremen. He never really broke through in the Hanseatic city and was eventually sold to Trabzonspor in 2014. In his first season he scored 9 goals and assisted another 11, but he couldn't replicate those numbers afterwards. In early 2017 he was suspended by Trabzonspor because he insisted on a transfer to Fenerbahce instead of Besiktas which Trabzonspor preferred. When his contract ran out after the season he finally joined Fener and played there until last season, albeit with mediocre success.
Ekici played for the German youth national teams before the Turkish FA convinced him to play for them after his strong start to the 2010/11 season. He debuted against the Netherlands in November 2010 but never managed to play a major part in the Crescent-Stars' team. His last appearance to date was in 2015.

Ceyhun Gülselam

Age: 32
Position: Defensive Midfielder
Current team: Alanyaspor
National team: Turkey (6 matches, 0 goals)
Gülselam spent the 1994/95 season at mighty Gartenstadt Trudering before spending 8 years in FC Bayern's junior teams. In 2006 he went to Unterhaching where he experienced his first games in 2. Bundesliga. They were relegated, but Gülselam still stayed for another season. He seems to have impressed some Turkish scouts as Trabzonspor decided to pick him up in 2008. Since then he has been playing for several teams in the Süper Lig with his current employer being Alanyaspor. Between 2014 and 2016 he spent two seasons in the Bundesliga at Hannover 96, he scored his only Bundesliga goal in a match against Leverkusen in November 2014.
Gülselam made his debut for the Turkish national team in March 2008, when coach Fatih Terim called him up for a friendly against Belarus. His last match took place nearly 11 years ago, he assisted a goal and was sent off shortly afterwards against Armenia.

Tarik Camdal

Age: 29
Position: Right Back
Current team: Adana Demirspor
National team: Turkey (6 matches, 1 goal)
Camdal spent most of his footballing youth in Ingolstadt, playing 8 years for Türkgücü Ingolstadt before going to MTV Ingolstadt at 13 years of age. When they played against 1860 Munich's youth team, the Lions' people in charge were so impressed that they offered Camdal a transfer right after the game. In 2009 he made his debut in the 2. Bundesliga and made several apperances in the senior team until 2011. For the season 2011/12 Süper Lig team Eskisehirspor decided to bring him to Turkey. He spent 3 seasons in Eskisehir before going to Galatasaray where he even got to play in the Champions League. He was loaned back to Eskisehir in 2016/17 but the loan didn't really help him with establishing himself at Gala. After several quarrels his contract was terminated in early 2019 and he went to Antalyaspor for the remainder of the season. Today he plays for Adana Demirspor in the second tier.
Camdal played for DFB's under-19 team but later decided to kick the ball for Turkey. His first of six call-ups to the national team was in November 2013 after a strong start of the season with Eskisehirspor. His last match followed about one year later. During his time in the national team he scored one goal in a friendly against Ireland.

Philipp Ospelt

Age: 27
Position: Left Midfielder
Current team: USV Eschen-Mauren
National team: Liechtenstein (5 matches, 0 goals)
Ospelt is yet another graduate of FC Bayern's youth where he played up to the under-19s. In 2010 he went to play for FC Buchs and later Young Fellows Juventus in Switzerland's lower leagues. In January 2012 he transferred to USV Eschen-Mauren, a team from Liechtenstein that - like all the outfits from the tiny country - play in the Swiss league system. Liechtenstein's only competition is the Liechtenstein Cup, which Ospelt and his colleagues went on to win in 2012. In 2013 he was picked up by Liechtenstein's best team FC Vaduz where he played until 2018 - with the exception of a short stint at WSG Wattens in Austria in 2016. After taking a short break, Ospelt returned to football in early 2019. He now plays for Eschen-Mauren again, currently in the fourth tier of Swiss football.
Ospelt's record for the national team is very weird. His first match was in 2012 against Lithuania, his second and third followed in 2016 and the fourth in 2017. His last appearance to date was last week, when Liechtenstein won 2:0 against powerhouse San Marino. However, Ospelt never started a match, in fact his longest appearance was three minutes long. If you add up all his minutes since he was first called up 8 years ago, you get a whopping NINE minutes of time on the pitch.

Nicola Sansone

Age: 29
Position: Left Winger
Current team: FC Bologna
National team: Italy (3 matches, 0 goals)
Nicola Sansone's career began in Eastern Munich, at SV Neuperlach. He then played for FC Bayern from 2002 until 2011. He made his debut for Bayern's under-23 team in February 2010 when he came on as a substitute for none other than David Alaba. In October 2010 he got to spend 90 minutes on the bench of the Bundesliga squad in a match against Freiburg. From 2011 on he was a Parma player, although he spent his first season on loan at Crotone. He had a decent spell both there and later in Parma which made Sassuolo buy him in early 2014. After two and a half very successful seasons Sansone was picked up by Villareal who paid 13 million € for the German Italian attacker. He had two pretty good seasons in La Liga, however things didn't work any more in 2018/19 which made Bologna loan Sansone during the winter transfer window. He is a key player in their squad ever since as the team from Emilia-Romagna decided to make the deal permanent in the following summer.
Sansone never really considered to play for Germany as he played for the Italian junior teams from under-17s up until the under-21s. Thanks to an impressive time at Sassuolo, coach Antonio Conte called Sansone up to the senior team in 2015, when he made his debut as a subsitute against Portugal. He was able to add two more matches to his tally in 2016, the last one being against his country of birth - Germany.

Lucas Hufnagel

Age: 26
Position: Central Midfielder
Current team: SpVgg Unterhaching
National team: Georgia (2 matches, 0 goals)
Hufnagel's first team was TSV Milbertshofen in the north of Munich. In 2001 he was picked up by FC Bayern where he spent ten years of his early footballing career. In 2011 he went to FC Ingolstadt only to transfer to SpVgg Unterhaching one year later. He slowly established himself as a key player in Unterhaching's senior team which made SC Freiburg sign him for their 2015/16 2. Bundesliga campaign. He got quite a bit of game time, but that changed after Freiburg's promotion in 2016. Hufnagel was demoted to the second team and consequently loaned out to Nürnberg in January 2017. However he failed to leave a real mark there as well and finally returned to Unterhaching in 2018 to play in the 3. Liga. He is a staple in their squad, having played well over 2000 minutes in both of the last two league seasons.
Hufnagel never had a real chance to become a German international however he was eligible for Georgia as well because of his Georgian mother. He made his debut in 2015 against Estonia and played another 4 minutes against Serbia in 2017. Before his senior debut he already played some games for the country's junior teams.

Kingsley Ehizibue

Age: 25
Position: Right Back
Current team: 1. FC Köln
National team: Nigeria (0 matches, 0 goals)
Ehizibue was born in Munich to Nigerian parents. When he was two years old, the family moved to Zwolle in the Netherlands. He played for local club CSV '28 before joining PEC Zwolle's youth system from which he later graduated. He made his professional debut in October 2014 in a cup game and played his first Eredivisie game two months later against Willem II. Since 2016 he was a permanent member of the first team and managed to become a key player. In 2019, after their promotion to the Bundesliga, 1. FC Köln picked him up and gave him a chance to shine in the country of his birth. He instantly became Cologne's starting right-back and played in 31 out of 34 possible league games.
Ehizibue played one match for the Dutch under-21s in 2016, which remains his only international experience to date. However, Nigeria's coach Gernot Rohr called him up to the Super Eagles' AFCON qualifier against Sierra Leone back in March. But due to the pandemic the fixture is yet to be played.

Koray Altintay

Age: 28
Position: Right Back
Current team: Fatih Karagümrük
National team: Turkey (0 matches, 0 goals)
Altintay's career began at SC Fürstenfeldbruck, where he stayed until he was 19 years old. After one squeezed in year at FC Bayern under-23s, 2. Bundesliga team Jahn Regensburg picked him up in 2012. He left the Jahn again in 2013 in order to play for Caykur Rizespor in the Süper Lig. He was a regular starter for them and managed to impress the scouts of Osmanlispor who signed him in 2016. He played some matches for the Ankara-based outfit, including one Europa League group fixture, but ultimately failed to establish himself. As a consequence he returned to Rizespor in early 2018 to help them to get back into the Süper Lig after their recent relegation. They indeed clinched promotion but Altintay failed to prove himself again in the following 2018/19 campaign. In September 2019 he joined Fatih Karagümrük and was an important part of their successful 1. Lig campaign. Altintay scored a goal in the promotion play-off semi-finals, Karagümrük went on to win the final in a thrilling penalty shoot-out and get back into Süper Lig after 36 years of absence.
After a strong start in 2013 with Caykur Rizespor, Fatih Terim let him join the Turkish national team for two friendlies against Northern Ireland and Belarus in November. However, he didn't get any time on the pitch and was never nominated again.

Alejandro Duarte

Age: 26
Position: Goalkeeper
Current team: FC Juárez
National team: Peru (0 matches, 0 goals)
There's not much information about Alejandro Duarte's youth on the internet. With his full name being Alejandro Christoph Duarte Preuss, I reckon that he probably has a German mother. However, he spent his first years as a goalkeeper at the FRAMA football academy in Lima before joining Esther Grande de Bentin, a semi-professional club from the suburbs of the Peruvian capital. In 2010, he returned to Germany to play for Bayer Leverkusen's under 17 team. He left the Werkself again in 2011 and continued to play for Juan Aurich's junior team in Peru before breaking into their senior squad. He made his first league debut in 2013 in a 1:1 draw against Inti Gas. He went on to join Club Cienciano in 2015 and later Deportivo Municipal in 2016 but didn't get much game time at either club. This changed when Duarte was signed by USM Porres in 2017. Duarte finally got to play more games between the sticks which secured him move to Mexico in 2018 when Lobos BUAP decided to sign him. After an unsuccessful stint at the team from Puebla, the keeper joined FC Juárez but was immediately loaned out to Club Atlético Zacapetec in the second league. He was their main goalkeeper, however the club was dissolved and he recently returned to Juárez.
Duarte was called up for Peru's friendlies against Croatia and Iceland in March 2018. He wasn't granted any game time however. Thus, his three matches for Peru's under-19s remain his only international appearances.

Jonathan Klinsmann

Age: 23
Position: Goalkeeper
Current team: LA Galaxy
National team: USA (0 matches, 0 goals)
Klinsmann junior was born during his father Jürgen's time at FC Bayern. His mother is an American model. Jonathan shortly lived in Genoa when Jürgen played for Sampdoria before the family moved to California after Jürgen's career. Jonathan started his career as a striker for FC Blades 96 and Irving Lasers. In 2008 he followed his father - who accepted a job as FC Bayern head coach - back to Germany and was retrained into a goalkeeper by FC Bayern's academy. After his return to California, Klinsmann played for Pateadores and Strikers FC in the US Soccer Development Academy. He also represented his high school between 2011 and 2014 and later played for the California Golden Bears, Berkeley university's college team. During the summer of 2017, Klinsmann had several trials at European teams like VfB Stuttgart, West Ham and Everton. After another trial at Hertha BSC, the capital city club signed the American. He played one match for Hertha's senior team - a Europa League fixture against Östersunds FK - and he even saved a penalty. He joined St. Gallen in 2019 where he became the goalkeeper for the Swiss Cup matches. However, he got red carded in the second round and the team got knocked out by FC Winterthur. In August 2020 Klinsmann joined the LA Galaxy.
Klinsmann played for various US youth teams before being called up to the senior USMNT in November 2018. He was an injury replacement for Zack Steffen for the team's friendlies against England and Italy but ultimately stayed on the bench.

Anes Osmanoski

Age: 20
Position: Central Midfielder
Current team: Bregalnica Stip
National team: North Macedonia (0 matches, 0 goals)
Osmanoski played for 1860 München until he was 13 years old. He then transferred to SpVgg Unterhaching's youth teams and stayed at the club until 2019 when he decided to move to his parents' home country North Macedonia. He now plays for Bregalnica Stip in the Eastern group of the Macedonian second division. They finished the season in second place, barely missing out on promotion. To be honest, I can't tell you much more about his career as he's still very young and there's not that much information on the second tier of Macedonian football.
Osmanoski played for several junior national teams of his country and is in fact a current member of the under-20 team. However, he was called up for a friendly of the senior national team in 2017 when he was just 17 years old. Macedonia - back then still without the "North" - won 2:0 against Norway but little Osmanoski did not get any minutes on the pitch with the big guys.

Look 1: I can’t stop looking at the inner corner highlight and the purple ‘highlight’. High chroma colours look mesmerising on darker skin tones.
Look 2: the first image is my favourite. The way Doniella Davy approaches makeup is so refreshing, she really doesn’t pay attention to what’s popular and talks about working with your eye shape rather than trying to create a new one! The plummy tones really bring out the actor in the middle’s eye and skin colour.
The Dior Men’s Fall 2020 looked cool. It really seems to accentuate their bone structure and it’s really interesting to see how the same makeup looks on different skin tones.
Obsessed with red these days. Some serious inspo coming from lapetitvengeance in general. This is what I aspire to go out looking like. Lol jk in real life I mostly do simple makeup. A simpler look but I love how the blush is positioned a little low. Placement high either on the apples or cheekbone is popular these days for that lifting effect but this looks youthful. Looks like really pretty rosacea and reminds me of Georgian makeup.
I love how the hooded eye is accentuated in this. German Vogue 1995 lol. I love Mary Greenwell, her pink hair is so fun and the way she slaps foundation on her models makes me laugh. One of her runway looks for Tom Ford could be adapted for a twist on every day makeup! Not sure but I’m going to try one of these days even though I usually wear really simple boring makeup

Saakashvili's video as another sabotage against Georgia
https://preview.redd.it/mg7quw1rr9m51.jpg?width=827&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2571c3e7460a34599bbb9ff8a0cb146bb27b1fbb
On August 27, Saakashvili dedicated a video filmed in Ukraine to the theme of his return to Georgia, where he promises to return in a rather artistic form - against the backdrop of nature and landscapes permeated by the Ukrainian sun.
According to Saakashvili, Ukraine is the country that, in the most difficult period, accepted him as he is, without any conditions and demands, that it was there that he had time to think, he overestimated a lot and understood the main thing - that “there were mistakes , including grave mistakes. " And now he knows "how to serve your country and how to prevent new mistakes."
Saakashvili even apologized, but it is not clear why he is apologizing, for what specific crime. “For the mistakes that I made, for the fact that I did not complete them, I want to publicly apologize to everyone,” Saakashvili says and emphasizes that his presidency was not in vain.
The day after the distribution of the video, Saakashvili addressed the citizens of Ukraine: “Some of my Ukrainian friends just mourned my farewell to Ukraine. I want to reassure everyone! Head up! We will fight both in Ukraine and in Georgia. And we will win in both! For me, the fate of these two countries is inseparable! " Saakashvili reassured the Ukrainians.
And if someone who heard these words is surprised - they say how can one be torn between two such problem countries - we will answer: it was the "evil genius" who always gave strength to such destructive historical figures.
The leaders of the ruling Georgian Dream party reacted calmly to the return of the wanted ex-president to Georgia and said that if Saakashvili finds the strength and returns to Georgia, he will, of course, face a detention procedure at the border and a Georgian prison.
True, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava, in turn, notes that Saakashvili is already tired of his own associates, and, according to a member of the Georgian Dream faction, Rati Ionatamishvili, what is a mistake in Saakashvili's language, in the language of justice means a crime.
As for the position of the new political party "Lelo", in the opinion of its leader, founder of TVS Bank Mamuka Khazaradze, they have already seen this movie, and he does not want to comment on Saakashvili's departure and arrival. Khazaradze urged his voters not to make a choice between two bad forces, since both of them are “the past”.
The rating of the ex-president's party, which was presented in the studies of the American organization Edison Research and the International Republican Institute, is alarming primarily for the UNM itself. The "Nationals" became convinced that the campaign to unite the opposition - "Strength in Unity", launched during the 2018 presidential elections, did not work in its favor, and now the United National Movement needs the appearance of the figure of Mikhail Saakashvili, since the UNM electorate is this is just the ex-president's personal electorate, and no other leader can increase this electorate.
And another question: does Saakashvili have the right to become the prime minister of the country, does a foreign citizen have the right to be included in the electoral lists of any political party? The Georgian Constitution prohibits the appointment of a person with dual citizenship to the post of Prime Minister.
Most likely, talking about the return, Miho and his associates are betting on the victory in these parliamentary elections of the opposition Power in Unity bloc, which united 11 opposition parties, including the former ruling United National Movement, created by Saakashvili.
But the ruling party, although it lost popularity after numerous protests, still continues to lead the polls. Thus, according to a study by IRI, “Georgian Dream” ranks first in the rating of preferences (33%). 52% and the party took the first place according to the results of the Survation study commissioned by the Rustavi 2 TV channel. The second place in both polls went to the United National Movement, though by a significant margin from the Georgian Dream - 16% and 19%, respectively.
Let us also remember how Saakashvili ran across the rooftops, how he was dragged by the whirlwinds in a restaurant, how he was detained, how he then sent a letter filled with tears to the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and he was barely released from prison. Then he allegedly wanted to become the prime minister of Ukraine, allegedly he is still the greatest reformer and boss of all in Ukraine. In reality, he is not even a middle-level official, and now it turns out that he is returning to Georgia. How many times he has already deceived his supporters and feeds them with a false promise to return. It floats across the sea, then from land, then it breaks a tunnel. Even if Saakashvili voluntarily returns to Georgia, it will be very good, since additional documents will not be required for his extradition to his homeland. Instead of a two-week quarantine, he will undergo a seven-year quarantine in Georgia, in a European-level prison.
According to Georgian experts, the second stage of Saakashvili's return can be expected soon, when he will tell his electorate: “For the UNM to win, I will return and be the prime minister. But I won't come now, when they might put handcuffs on me and put me in jail. " In their opinion, Saakashvili has become a model of political satire, but this does not give the Georgian government the right to relax. The statements made by the ex-president from abroad exacerbate the political situation in Georgia and pose the danger of civil confrontation. According to political analysts, it is time for the Georgian government to apply the article on the attempted coup d'état, since during the 2018 presidential elections Saakashvili had already called on the country's armed forces to disobey and violently overthrow the government. Therefore, on the basis of this article, the prosecutor's office may well demand his extradition.
And in conclusion, about the external form of the video and why Saakashvili is on it in splendid isolation and in a clean Ukrainian field. Recall that in April 2014, the head of the Odessa region, Mikhail Saakashvili, published a video on the Internet with the positions of the secret Ukrainian checkpoints of the Storm battalion in Donbass, the faces of the fighters and an operational map with the commander's remarks. Then the battalion commander, after the inspection, was asked to write a letter of resignation, and the General Staff of the country unofficially stated that Saakashvili's political PR was a real sabotage against the Armed Forces of Ukraine. So, apparently, after such incidents in Ukraine, Miho is no longer allowed to shoot videos against the backdrop of state-important facilities, and indeed of Ukrainian citizens.
But if the August video helps Saakashvili at least enter Georgia, then it can also be regarded as another sabotage of Mikho. Only now against Georgia and its people ...

The slavery of XXI century, or three reasons why Georgia «should consider USA as the most important ally»

Recently, Georgia's "great friend" Luke Coffey, director of the non-governmental organization Douglas and Sarah Ellison Foreign Policy Center, published an author's article on The Heritage Foundation's website titled "The United States Must Focus on Georgia's De-occupation and Transatlantic Path ". Recall that not so long ago, he came out with a proposal to deploy American troops, which supposedly should be withdrawn from Syria, at the former Soviet and then Russian base in Akhalkalaki.
So in his article, Coffey named three reasons why Georgia should be considered the most important ally of the United States. It turns out that the first of these is faithful service in hot spots. Yes, Georgia has the largest military contingents after the US in Iraq and Afghanistan, the highest combat losses per capita. Georgia's record contribution is 2,000 troops in the most dangerous provinces of Afghanistan - Helmand and Kandahar.
True, the question arises: what do Georgian guys in military uniform need in Afghanistan, Iraq, Mali? For whom are the Georgian servicemen losing their lives and health, who are actually "dragging chestnuts out of the fire" for the Americans?
And first of all the USA needs it. It is necessary that the coffins go not to the States, but to Georgia ...
Representatives of the Georgian political elite have always lobbied for the issue of sending the republic's military to hot spots, but it is known for sure that their children and loved ones will never be on the lists of the dead and wounded (as well as on the lists of the Georgian military who are sick with coronavirus in Afghanistan).
The second reason, according to Coffey, is Georgia's important geopolitical position, which will immediately give the United States a strategic advantage, plus oil and gas pipelines, transport lines and much more.
These words were confirmed by the fact that the Georgian authorities “suddenly” decided to continue cooperation with the very American oil company Frontera, the contract with which was canceled on April 20, 2020 by the State Oil and Gas Agency of Georgia on the basis of the decision of the Arbitration Court. It is clear that organizations like Frontera, which are engaged in search and reconnaissance activities in Georgia, really control the levers of the most powerful potential of the country's economy.
In fact, imagine what is happening: the United States of America, which we have recognized as strategic partner number one and a friendly state, is practically forcing us to kneel down and declare the lawsuit won with Frontera lost. Naturally, the question arises: what is this if not the colonialism of the 21st century, which is being imposed on us under the name of democracy?
And the third reason is that, as it turns out, Georgia's path to democracy is a role model. Here is the liberalization of the economy, and the reduction of bureaucracy, and the fight against corruption. This reason, besides a sad smile, does not cause any emotions at all.
And the fact that the country still has an ugly political system, which, unfortunately, is stable and indestructible, makes it possible to impose such semantic standards on Georgia that reinforce the colonialism of the 21st century. This is what must change - Georgia must once and for all cease being a vassal of the United States and, perhaps, even finally become a bridge between major geopolitical centers, such as, on the one hand, the North Atlantic Alliance, and on the other hand, the Eurasian Union. Especially when the third geopolitical center, the European Union, is going through a crisis and is actually on the verge of collapse.

2020.08.24 21:03 louisaday Antique olive green silk gown acquired at auction... I need help dating/authenticating!

Hello my fashionable friends!! First post here. I have a mystery dress on my hands and I would love to hear your insights!
Background: I live on the east coast of the US. I am a burgeoning antique textiles & clothing collector. I've been collecting for about 5 years. I have a degree in History, and I specialized in western sociocultural history from 1770s to 1890s. My academic interests include fashion history, philosophy, material culture, literature (especially broadsides & pamphlets) and mourning.
Description: I acquired this dress through an online auction via a local auction house last weekend. It was listed as "1920 vintage olive green silk dress." It is made of a finely woven, heavy olive green silk. The dress is entirely hand stitched. It has an empire waistline, VERY small area for the bust, with a low scooped neckline. Something odd about the neckline is that the inside hem is very jagged; I think someone may have altered it at some point, considering the even hand that stitched everywhere else on the garment. Interesting petal-shaped sleeves protrude from each shoulder - I think a white chemise with puff sleeves would have been worn underneath, to fill out each sleeve? When worn, the whole bodice is shifted forward and down, so that in the back, it rides up higher than in the front. The dress has false silk-covered buttons at the back, where there is an opening with several hook-and-eye closures and a drawstring silk tie at the back waistline. It has small gathers all along the drawstring silk tie. The skirt is made from several pieces: one long rectangular piece down the front, two triangular pieces at the bottom of each side, and a longer, slightly-trained piece in the back. There is no ornamentation anywhere on the dress besides a very thin strip of the same plain olive silk decorating the edges of each petal sleeve. The dress has sweat stains at the armpits, and two rips that have been repaired (?) at the neckline. The final piece of the mystery is a fabric label sewn into the interior of the bodice that reads "INSTALLATION". This label looks (to me) like it was manufactured sometime between 1880-1940.
Theories:
The Grand Installation ceremony spanned a couple days (requiring numerous costume changes, of course) and took place at Windsor Castle in London. I have found quite a few descriptions of the nobility's fashion choices, as well as the official proceedings, which seem sort of like parades & banquets. Several thousands of spectators crowded around the Castle before, during, and after the installation ceremonies.
(Tentative) conclusion: I think this dress was in a private collection. The collector (or perhaps original owner's descendant?) labeled this dress as the "Installation" dress to identify it, similar to the way people used to sew in their own custom name tags. I think the auction house either didn't know how to date historical clothing, or it was a typo and they meant 1820.
In my opinion, this dress fits in with Spring 1805 fashion plates. My questions:
I just want to hear what you all think. Obviously I'm hoping its an authentic regency gown, but I'm completely open to the possibility it is a replica or costume. I just bought it because its gorgeous, and either way, it's old!
EDIT: Ok the prints I attached didn't show up.. anyway here are the fashion plates

2020.08.17 15:29 Ediththth TIFU by getting an accidental (and unnecessary) colonoscopy.

This happened about four years ago but some recent (minor) TIFUs concerning my bowel movements reminded me and I thought I'd share.
So, four years ago I spent a month in Georgia (the country) with a couple of friends. None of us spoke the language but since most people we interacted with spoke English, it was not an issue. Besides, one of my friends spoke very basic Russian (How much? How long? Thank you. And similar phrases) which was a great help when talking to older taxi drivers or people at the market.
Two weeks on the trip I got a major UTI. Since it was the first time I experienced a UTI, I didn't know what was happening except that for three days straight my private parts were burning up every time I tried to pee. After three days, blood started showing up and I completely freaked out. I asked my friend who spoke basic Russian to come to the hospital with me, if anything she could talk to the taxi driver. She did not know any medical terms or any complex words so she would not be able to help during the hospital visit.
To my surprise, when we got to the hospital we realized that nobody there spoke English or any of the other languages either of us spoke. So, using basic English words and a lot of gestures (at this point it looked like I was part of a charades game) I asked the receptionist in which department I should go to. For those who aren't familiar with the Georgian language, they have their own alphabet so we wouldn't be able to understand the names of the departments even though most of them have their roots in Latin and are pretty similar in most languages.
This is where the fuck up began. The receptionist looking at me gesturing towards my genitalia and making "I'm in pain" faces, figured out that I had a problem with pooping, and pointed me toward the gastrointestinal department and we followed.
We went in the office of the only doctor there, a middle-aged woman who did not understand one word in English and with such a thick Russian accent that my friend couldn't make out any words she was saying. My first clue should have been all the anatomy posters and models in her office, all of which showed the digestive system with no hint of the urinary tract. Being in extreme pain by that point, I paid no attention to the posters and continued my charade game pointing toward my genitalia and trying to imply it burns.
The doctor then tried to ask me how many times a day was I pooping, which with a little translation help (and a lot of struggle) from my friend, I showed her 10 fingers. She is shocked as pooping 10 times a day is not normal. She then asks "blood"? To which my reply is shaking my head like a madman as there was indeed, a lot of blood in my urine.
The doctor then assumed that my problem was hemorrhoids and needed to proceed with a colonoscopy to make sure. Without being able to tell me this, she gestures for me to follow her into an exam room and I do. She points for me to take my pants off and sit on a table with two metal feet holders like at the gyno's. I sit there assuming that she wants to look on the outside of my genitalia to ensure there is no swelling or redness or any external sign of an infection.
I am sitting there, completely un-sedated, with no pain medication whatsoever, expecting a simple examination. To my surprise, as soon as the doctor sits in front of me with a clear view of my private parts, a sharp, metal thing goes up my asshole. It hurt so bad, if I was a cartoon character my eyes would have popped out and in that split up second, I realized I had fucked up. The tube kept going further in my asshole and expanding inside.
At which point I start screaming and trying to remove the tube with my hand but the doctor assumes that is just my reaction to the pain and slaps my hand away. I tried to stop her for the next 3-4 minutes by yelling "wrong hole" but to no avail. At that point, I simply gave up and started laughing out loud on the chair until the procedure was over. It took another hour to finally clarify with the doctors and find the urology department.
TL;DR I went to a hospital in Georgia to get treatment for a UTI. Because I didn't speak the language, nor paid attention to the clearly non-urology related posters in the doctor's office, I ended up getting a colonoscopy instead.

2020.08.15 23:34 CatLover1226 Are Jews all one ethnicity with common Levantine roots? Not exactly...

I am going to try not to make this political to the best I can, but a central tenant of Zionism is the notion that Jews all trace back, significantly so, to the Levant and Jews are more closely related to one another than to other ethnic groups.
23andme results show that this is not the case. It shows Yemenites are significantly Arabian converts, North African Sephardim have significant Berber, Iberian, and South Italian ancestry, and that Ashkenazim have a different gene pool.
I modeled them on Vahaduo, and this is what I get for each. I modeled Ashkenazim both with and without Assyrians as a choice, because with both Assyrians and Samaritans as a choice, Assyrian is preferred. So I removed Assyrians and tried it again and when I did, a mixture of Samaritan and Bedouin captured their WANA side... so I removed Bedouins and tried a third time.
I am not finding that the majority of Jewish groups are majority Levantine, and I do believe there is significant foreign mixture in nearly every group.

2020.08.08 09:58 robothawk [NEWS] The Hajj - A Journey Begins with a Single Step

Khadzhiyev was old, seventy-two to be exact, and he had been Komandir for half of those years. Yet, he had never undertaken his duty to complete the Hajj. For the first time in decades, the Legion was free from internal strife and external threats. The collapse of the Georgian Soviet had erased the only major threat on the border of the Legion, and the execution of Desheriyev had ensured that his successor would not face organized opposition. As the Legion, his family, could now survive his absence, he was called to participate in the holy pilgrimage.
Grozny was a bustling city, full of activity. Street vendors sold food, Militsiya kept the peace on corners, and the Industrial Cadres toiled away in massive factory complexes. The slow liberalization of the Legion had brought many comforts to the people of the Legion, but their Spartan lifestyles would not be worn away so easily. Khadzhiyev had elected to make his pilgrimage alone, but at the behest of his successor, he was joined by a young Militsiya sergeant from out West, who was on medical leave since a bandit ambush left him laying in the gutter of a dirt road, bleeding out and talking to himself about driving off the bandits. Either way, the companionship would be welcome at least. He allowed himself some simple pleasures, a cart and donkey to haul supplied with them over the Caucuses, as well as a handful of pre-made meals which would prevent the need to rely entirely on local towns to resupply. He left the downtown marketplaces with a new rifle too, fresh off the industrial lines, a new model semi-automatic chambered in 5.5x45, a new cartridge which supposedly kept the power of the older 762 longs and mixed it with the lightened recoil of the Sturmoviki guns. It would definitely be helpful if the rifle didn't break his old shoulder every time he fired it. He made his way to the southern end of the city, keeping a look out for the young Militsiya boy who was supposedly making the Hajj with him, when a young man in an oversized Militsiya coat and a red-blue sergeants cap approached.
"Sergeant Yuri, reporting in Komandir Sir. I've secured us a pack animal and cart, and we are ready to depart!"

2020.07.22 11:44 AraDeSpanikEli Combining roles. What does the new Armenian-Azerbaijani escalation mean for Russia?

https://carnegie.ru/commentary/82333
Article in Russian by Sergey Markedonov published on Moscow Carnegie Center website.
Translation:
The final transition of Russia to either side in the conflict is dangerous for Armenia and Azerbaijan themselves. After all, it will mean a break and sharply negative relations with Moscow for the other side. As a result, Karabakh will turn from a unique platform, where Russia and the West cooperate despite their global confrontation, into another arena for their rivalry with all the ensuing risks and dangers.
The July military confrontation between Azerbaijan and Armenia became the largest since their "four-day war" in April 2016. Moreover, this time the confrontation took place not along the line of contact in Nagorno-Karabakh, but on the interstate border of the two countries. That is, we are not talking about a separatist or irredentist conflict, but about an interstate one, which adds a new international dimension to it.
For example, Armenian border guards guard the borders of Armenia together with their colleagues from Russia. Not to mention the fact that Armenia is a member of the CSTO and the Eurasian Economic Union, and a Russian military base is located on its territory in Gyumri. Azerbaijan refrains from participating in integration projects, but it also has influential allies - first of all, Turkey, which consistently supports the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and condemns Armenia's actions in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The acuteness of the situation is increased by the fact that Armenia and Turkey have not yet overcome the difficult historical legacy of past conflicts. There are no diplomatic relations between neighboring countries, and since 1993 Turkey has kept a closed border with Armenia.

Why Russia is not Turkey

As expected from the allies of different sides, the statements of Moscow and Ankara regarding the new Armenian-Azerbaijani aggravation turned out to be very different. For example, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called on Armenia to "come to its senses" and "collect thoughts". Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar spoke out even more harshly: "We will continue to provide all possible assistance to the armed forces of Azerbaijan against Armenia, which has been pursuing a policy of aggression for many years, illegally occupying Azerbaijani lands."
For comparison, the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov expressed the hope that Baku and Yerevan would return to the ceasefire, while President Putin himself, discussing the July escalation at a meeting of the Russian Security Council, said that Moscow was ready to become a mediator in resolving the armed confrontation.
Why has Russia adopted such a cautious position, which, in the opinion of many in Armenia, contradicts its allied obligations under the CSTO? Moreover, in other post-Soviet conflicts - from South Ossetia to Crimea - Moscow acted much tougher. But at the Armenian-Azerbaijani theater, Moscow is showing restraint.
This restraint reflects several fundamental features of Russian policy in the region. First, Moscow, in principle, does not have a universal approach to the settlement of all Caucasian and even more so post-Soviet conflicts. The model of Abkhazia and South Ossetia was not reproduced in Transnistria, and the Crimean events were not repeated in Donbass. Moscow does not follow some common set standards or ideological postulates, but rather responds to the very dynamics of a conflict on the ground.
Secondly, for Russia, even in multilateral structures, bilateral relations are of particular value. How does Azerbaijan differ from the same Georgia, where Russia reacted harshly to the escalation of August 2008? First of all, by the fact that Baku does not link its actions to restore territorial integrity with anti-Russian rhetoric.
The Azerbaijani parliament does not pass resolutions on Russian occupiers (all of this appeared in Georgian rhetoric long before August 2008), and Moscow's mediation is viewed in a positive light. It is enough to read the interview of Ilham Aliyev - the role of Russia in the Karabakh settlement is always assessed positively in them. As well as the personal relations of the leaders of the two countries.
Baku is skeptical about the prospect of joining the CSTO or the Eurasian Union, but in NATO and the EU, unlike Georgia, it does not seek and even openly condemns many Western political and everyday standards. Of course, there are those in Azerbaijan who sympathize with the "Georgian choice", but their influence is not great.
Moscow and Baku are also linked by many common areas of cooperation, from cross-border security and energy to the exploitation of Caspian resources and transport projects. The Kremlin would not like to turn Azerbaijan into a second Georgia, and therefore they are not going to push Baku to the path of confrontation with their own hands.
It is another matter if the Azerbaijani leadership itself chooses "Euro-Atlantic solidarity" and "flight from Russia." Then Moscow's position will become much less cautious and nuanced. But until this happens, Russia is striving to balance between Yerevan and Baku.
Finally, another important difference between Russian policy and the actions of the same Turkey is that Ankara is not particularly interested in Armenia. Turkey has long been in confrontation with this country and is not going to make concessions to get out of it. There is no internal demand or external pressure for this.
Moscow, on the other hand, appears in the Caucasus in several forms at once. One of them is an ally of Armenia, the other is a mediator in the Karabakh settlement. During the current escalation in Armenia, there has been a lot of criticism of the CSTO. Indeed, the members of this organization pay much more attention to solving narrower problems in their regions than to general cooperation.
However, Armenia does not have much choice - even in this form, the CSTO opens up opportunities for the country for military cooperation with Russia and access to arms purchases at a discount. This provides Armenia with the level of defense and security that keeps its neighbors from ill-considered actions, makes them rationalize their approaches, pushing aside emotions and negative historical memories.
If Armenia withdrew from the CSTO or lost its special relationship with Russia, then the actions of the same Turkey could not be limited to harsh statements by ministers and the closure of the state border. The experience of Syria, Iraq and Cyprus eloquently testifies to the fact that in its near abroad Ankara relies not only on soft power.

Difficulties in mediation

Speaking about Russian mediation in the Karabakh conflict, one should not forget that it was with the decisive role of Russia that a ceasefire was established in Karabakh in May 1994, and in April 2016 the “four-day war” was ended. Most likely, even now the parties will return to the negotiating table with the active participation of Moscow.
Unlike Abkhazia or Donbass, here the role of Russia is perceived positively both in the US and in the EU, not to mention the two sides of the conflict. The rhetorical question is whether Moscow should risk this leverage for the sake of yet another show of strength. Although this option cannot be completely ruled out, especially in response to attempts by other world powers to break the current status quo in order to oust Russia from the region. But so far this does not happen, and Moscow continues to combine seemingly incongruous things: an alliance with Armenia, partnership with Azerbaijan and mediation in the settlement of the long-term Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.
Of course, neither Baku nor Yerevan is completely satisfied with this state of affairs. But if Moscow made the final choice in favor of one of them, it would sharply reduce its room for maneuver. Russia is well aware that the search for compromises is the business of the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides. They are not ready for this, but no one will do this work for them.
Nevertheless, there are many tasks that Russia is fully capable of solving - to stop the consequences of possible escalations and preserve the foundation, if not for meaningful negotiations, then for managing the conflict in order to avoid its final unfreezing. For Moscow, any other option in relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan is fraught with a sharp polarization of the Caucasus, which may lead to the activation of other powers there - from Turkey to the United States and the EU - and Russia's loss of the status of an honest broker in the Karabakh settlement.
Moreover, the final transition of Russia to either side in the conflict is dangerous for Armenia and Azerbaijan themselves. After all, it will mean a break and sharply negative relations with Moscow for the other side. As a result, Karabakh will turn from a unique platform where Russia and the West cooperate on top of their global confrontation, into another arena for their rivalry with all the ensuing risks and dangers.

2020.07.07 15:20 efa___ I Read It So You Don't Have To: Class with the Countess (by LuAnn de Lesseps)

After my most recent adventure through the topsy-turvy mind of Kelly Bensimon in I Can Make You Hot!, it seems only fitting that my next literary endeavor provides a complementary perspective on self-improvement from another of RHONY's most erudite minds. That's right -- I extend to you all a most cordial invitation to join me as I master the fine art of manners with the queen of compunction herself, Countess LuAnn de Lesseps, in her debut literary work, Class with the Countess: How to Live with Elegance and Flair.
Looking at the book's cover, I immediately feel a warm sense of reassurance as my eyes light upon the weighty gold chain hanging pendulously off of LuAnn's neck, a dozen jewel-toned baubles dangling haphazardly and drawing my attention away from the slight hint of cleavage exposed by her fitted salmon scoop-neck. It is 2009 again, and I am eager to return -- at least for the next 258 pages -- to a simpler time. A time when the Black Eyed Peas reigned, a year when the VMAs were Kanye's biggest controversy, an era when LuAnn de Lesseps was still rightfully titled with her well-deserved Countess honorific.
And possibly a time before the invention of sarcasm, if this quote on the back cover gives any indication. It would take a lot to convince me that this review was given with anything less than complete ironic disdain. I could have copied it word-for-word into my own book report and no one would have been the wiser.
"Being an extremely low-born and gauche person, I rely heavily on the Countess for tips on good manners and etiquette. She has also taught me how to be more sassy and alluring." -- Simon Doonan, author of Eccentric Glamour
A hearty cheers to you, Simon Doonan, although it feels a bit unsettling to be shown up so early in my journey. Nevertheless, I must admit that I'm eager to learn how I myself can become more sassy and alluring, so I open to the Introduction ("How Does a Countess Come to Be on Reality TV?") and begin to read. LuAnn begins by sharing with us the reason she felt so compelled to write the volume I hold before me:
Since the first season of The Real Housewives of New York City began to air, I have been deluged with e-mails and letters asking my advice on everything from what to wear to knowing what to say, from table manners to how to radiate confidence.
I steadfastly refuse to believe that there is even one single person in the world who wrote out the question "How do I radiate confidence?" on a physical piece of paper and proceeded to the nearest mailbox to mail that letter to the only person they believed could possibly answer the enclosed query with any modicum of finesse, the inimitable Countess LuAnn de Lesseps. Let alone anything close to a "deluge" of them. But I digress.
LuAnn promises that she will share with us her "distinctive advice on how to navigate our sometimes rude world with elegance," but first explains briefly how she came to be the reality TV megastar she is today. As someone who has "always been daring and adventurous," LuAnn needed little convincing when Jill Zarin suggested she might be interested in filming. She explains her most compelling motivation as such:
First, I wanted the history of the de Lesseps family to be better known in the United States. They are so respected in Europe and little known here. From building the Suez Canal to presenting the Statue of Liberty to the United States for the French, their international contributions have been exemplary and deserve more recognition in my own country.
LuAnn continues by bemoaning that "we are constantly assaulted by offensive, coarse, selfish behavior." Examples of this brazen incivility include such unimaginable horrors as "the enthusiastic chewing of gum in public" and "the sight of jeans and running shoes at the theater or opera." As one might expect from someone who has endured such torment and come out the other side standing tall, our author assures us that her tale "is an entertaining and, I hope, inspiring story." We are reminded once again that LuAnn attributes her success to "my penchant for being daring and open to new possibilities," and she briefly opines about how delightful Italy is, because "even young boys knew how to appreciate a woman." With a few concluding words ("I hope that imparting the experiences and lessons I have learned will help you to live a richer, more satisfying life -- one animated by a profound joie de vivre."), we finish the Introduction and begin Part One: "The Art of Being Yourself (in Any Situation)."
LuAnn thoughtfully begins the chapter with photographic proof of her qualifications -- specifically, this nonchalant snapshot of our good-taste guru "being myself in Capri." She remarks, in a passage titled "Confidence is the Key,"
I have to confess: I was born confident. Being a shrinking violet was never my style.
As someone with a clinically diagnosed anxiety disorder, I feel confident endorsing the utility of the following cutting-edge tips that LuAnn offers up as "Quick Confidence Boosters:"
Reminder: No one is perfect.

Don't take yourself too seriously.

Pump yourself up with positive thinking.
I wish I'd purchased this book two years ago -- I could have saved a boatload in therapy bills. But at this point, all I can do is move forward, committed to gleaning every pearl of wisdom from the tome before me (ugh, I still can't use the word tome without thinking of Simon van Kempen).
We cheerily follow LuAnn back to a story of a trip to Italy, where she met a handsome Italian man -- "like a Roman god." She continues: "we became close friends, and eventually he was my lover." A few paragraphs later, we return once more to Italy, where LuAnn wins the "Lady Universe" pageant and changes the course of her life forever. As she reflects:
I was no longer just LuAnn, I was Lady Universo! Believe it or not, this is what opened up the door for me in Europe, because the moment you have a title, any title, you are in.
It is both hilarious and entirely on-brand that LuAnn de Lesseps would gallivant around Europe calling herself a "lady" after winning a bootleg beauty pageant without, I'm sure, bothering to correct anyone who might just happen to accidentally get the wrong idea and assume she had some sort of noble heritage. Regardless, she soon got roles as a background model in a series of Italian TV shows. She recalls:
The Italians adopted me as their own. Everybody just loved the American girl. They loved showing me the ropes and expressed their enthusiasm openly. They were introducing me to everything and everybody. I'd get my derrière pinched on the bus.
My impulse to interpret this as sexual harassment (at the very least!) is clearly just a sign that I am not yet classy enough to understand the world as accurately as the Countess, and for her guidance I remain eternally grateful. Proving her cutthroat savvy, she continues her Italian saga by unceremoniously dropping her first boyfriend when "Roberto Gancia" comes along. Roberto "had a higher level of sophistication," by which LuAnn means he was very old and incomprehensibly wealthy.
The anecdote concludes and we move into another section, titled "Be Curious and Learn from Everything and Everyone." As LuAnn tells us:
I have always suspected that my profound respect for older people derives from my Native American roots. Elders are so important in Native American culture.
She also hints at her cabaret future to come with a remark that "I also love to sing -- Bette Midler comes to mind -- all kinds of music from cabaret to country rock." I suppose we should just be grateful that LuAnn didn’t pursue a Country Rock career (or perhaps disappointed?).
I'm impressed, reading the following passage, by LuAnn's dogged refusal to admit to having done anything wrong ever, even in a hypothetical scenario. As she explains;
The motivating principle in my life is to take chances without fear or hesitation. Jump on the train or you'll miss it. I live that way. I've taken chances and followed my instincts. Nothing exciting would have happened to me if I had been timid and afraid. I'd probably still be living in Connecticut. And you know what? I'd still be happy, because I choose to be.
LuAnn doesn't let us go long without another reminder of how valuable her ancestry has proven to be: "An instinctive ability to observe closely is another quality that I attribute to my Native American heritage." She rounds out the chapter by listing some of her charity efforts, described with the bizarrely stilted phrase, "we help with the orphans of Myanmar."
The next chapter ("What's Outside") opens with this picture, from LuAnn's modeling days, that I'm actually super into, as well as a description of what it means to be elegant. Perhaps I'm biased after so recently reading Kelly's book-length fever dream about HOTness, but I find the following passage comfortingly coherent:
Elegance means handling all aspects of your life with self-confidence and aplomb. Elegance has no shelf life or expiration date. Elegance is a quality that does not age. It is an aura that enchants those around you, regardless of your stage in life or your station.
LuAnn gives the personally horrifying advice that "you should start with a full-length mirror and an unforgiving magnifying mirror for your face," which is guidance I know myself well enough to only take if I would like to wake up tomorrow having fruitlessly tried to extrude every whitehead, blackhead, and hint of a pore from my tortured face. I would hazard a guess LuAnn does not have this problem, as she proceeds to make an offhanded comment about "why I love mirrors in elevators" (because she loves to look at herself, she clarifies for the confused). I can almost picture her coyly winking as she delivers the rule, "Lingerie is visible…only if you want it to be."
We are next treated to a bit of diet advice, in which LuAnn confesses:
I like the Blood Type Diet, because I think that each person actually is a carnivore or an herbivore. Since I'm Type O, I need more meat and my body craves it.
I'm somehow not even surprised that LuAnn self-identifies as a carnivore. Between this and KKB's personal definition of what "organic" should mean, I'm quickly losing hope for the nutritional savvy of the eastern seaboard. She also gives the following piece of confounding wisdom…
Try not to drink while eating -- not even water -- because digestion begins in the mouth.
…before telling us about how yoga has "saved [her] from the effects of a traumatic experience." The traumatic experience in question is a terrifying car wreck with her children, which I can only imagine would send anyone into distress. Of course, only a ingenue with LuAnn's caliber of social circle would get in such an accident while on the way "to celebrate Elle Macpherson's son's birthday in Gstaad." Alas, we must find a way to be content with our own lots in life nevertheless.
Ever the generous soul, LuAnn remarks:
If I had one wish -- after world peace and an end to poverty -- it would be for a hair and makeup person every single day.
She also gives the less-financially-privileged among us thoughtful advice about choosing "a more modest salon" or buying supersized beauty products "at the price clubs." After which she immediately proceeds to deliver the following painfully unhip line..
My break-dancing son would call it do-rag [sic] style. I call it my style.
…and promptly erodes this goodwill. She also refers to blush as "blusher," which I can only assume she's doing on purpose to sound more sophisticated and/or European. I catch myself getting more irritated than I have any right to be about the fact that LuAnn correctly stylizes the brand "Lancôme," then promptly abandons the very notion of a diacritical mark by the time "Lancome" is mentioned two pages later.
As we begin Chapter 3 ("Fashion and Style"), LuAnn immediately informs us that dressing for television is a special challenge:
For example, the tailored white shirt that is a staple for me would not vibrate on TV.
She encourages us to wear more vests ("I love vests and don't think they are used enough"), as well as to purchase "an outerwear jacket that's a cross between a biker jacket and a blazer." She unsurprisingly notes that she likes "cocktail rings and big-statement necklaces," and tells us her favorite hair ornament is "a silk flower, because they never get stale and they add a touch of drama." A list of fashion faux pas includes "Pale-Leg Syndrome" and "leggings or no leggings" (which doesn’t seem to be a faux pas so much as a set of two possible situations, but who am I to judge?).
In a unintentionally poetic line, LuAnn encourages the reader to wear low-rise thongs or panties because "we live in a low-rise society." She also gives cryptic advice to add "a witty evening purse" to jazz up a plain outfit, rounding out the first part of the book. With LuAnn's alluring silhouette guiding the way, we proceed to Part Two: "The Art of Making Other People Comfortable."
We are treated to another cheeky nod to LuAnn's imminent cabaret stardom, as she shares the following joke with the titillated remark, "being just a little bit naughty often has great appeal."
Why don't condoms come in black?
…because they make you look too thin.
She next tells us "how to make an entrance," and, to be perfectly honest, I have trouble imagining someone consciously acting through the following steps and coming off as anything but heart-wrenchingly pathetic. But I'll let you decide:
Smile and pause for just a moment. Take a deep breath to bring light into your eyes. Let your eyes sweep the room and make eye contact when possible. Chances are someone will come up to greet you. If not, who cares?
If no one greets you, enter the room in a purposeful way. It's all about vitality. If you are utterly delighted to be there, I assure you that people will take notice.
The chapter continues with LuAnn's condemnations of contemporary society and its myriad ills:
People have lost sight of the fact that some rules make life easier. "Anything goes" has resulted in an abundance of unattractive, selfish behavior that assaults our senses. The wince factor is getting higher every day.
She informs us that anyone with any sense of politeness should stand when someone is being introduced "unless you're attached to an IV," then suggests that we smooth over any awkward introductions with the inane line, "How did you pronounce your name? You say it so much better than I do." On the issue of "traditional gallant courtesies," LuAnn quips, "Why not be put on a pedestal?" Indeed, as she breezily continues, "men essentially want to please you."
A section titled "Manners on the Move" informs the reader that they can make a New York City taxi driver laugh by "[asking] him to take you to Switzerland." I can only begin to imagine how utterly knee-slapping the Manhattan cab driver community finds these kind of kooky one-liners.
At this point in my reading, I'm starting to wish I'd kept a list of the times LuAnn starts a sentence with "There is nothing worse than…" In this particular example, "there is nothing worse than the tension of bill time," but I'm positive I've already read the phrase at least a dozen times in recent memory. Before I can reflect further, however, we're on to Chapter 5 ("The Art of Conversation"), which begins with this candid snap of a savvy, on-the-go LuAnn going about her day as the epitome of effortless elegance that she is. She offers a few "fail-proof opening lines," as conversation starters, such as:
Did you get hooked on The Real Housewives of New York City? I hear they are working on another season.
…as well as a few exceptionally subtle "half-truths" to help squeak your way out of a sticky situation.
The floral pattern is beautiful, but it's so bold it makes a big statement.

The curry was so exotic. That yogurt sauce was a perfect balance to the spiciness. That was so clever of you.
She goes on to tell us that she dislikes "bad gossip," which I interpret to mean "gossip about her," before treating her readers to the story of meeting her now-husband, Alexandre Counte de Lesseps -- at a dinner party in Gstaad. She recalls, "I had met princes and princesses and an occasional king, but I had yet to encounter a count." The anecdote quickly segues into a list of dining manners, customs, and preferences. For example:
Big napkins are so chic -- for me, the bigger the napkin, the more elegant the occasion.
LuAnn goes on to provide further details on her "passion" for the napkin and its associated arts, before dropping the single most rich-people-are-wild fact of the book thus far:
I have been to opulent dinners in Europe at which each guest had a liveried servant standing behind his chair to attend to his needs.
LuAnn next guides us on what to do if "crumbs fly" while we are breaking off a piece of bread: clean them up "nonchalantly, not as if you are a busboy or waiter." Again, I assume that I would understand what this means, were I only more elegant. She also warns us of the perils associated with taking inappropriate measures to clean up a spill:
Don't try to sop up red wine with your white napkin. Ask for help. You don't want to get the reputation as "the spotter" -- you'll never get invited again.
It's just like they always say: every friend group has a spotter. And if you don't know who that spotter is, it's probably you.
LuAnn describes her "chalet" in Switzerland, as well as the profound sense of joy she found in her surroundings:
I would often sit in the middle of the living room and relish the beauty of all the things that surrounded me. It gave me a warmth and tingle inside.
I, too, have previously been brought to orgasm by a particularly fine piece of antique furniture, so I find this sentiment relatable. LuAnn next works in another nugget of unabashed self-promotion by suggesting that we grab some friends and host a party to celebrate "a Real Housewives of New York City marathon."
A few selected tidbits to make sure your next soirée is as elegant as possible:
Make sure stacks of cocktail napkins are available. Coasters are for amateurs and the uptight.

If you don't have a DJ, iPod compilations are great.

It's nice to have fresh flowers or a single rose in the bathroom.
Sure, if you'd like your bathroom to look like the castle tower from Beauty and the Beast. Otherwise, having a single red rose in your bathroom seems like something a college boy with brown sheets would do to seem romantic. We are next treated to a peek behind the curtain with LuAnn's account of one of her most humiliating moments:
Taking your shoes off can be embarrassing -- and it happened to me. I arrived at a party to find that I was expected to leave my shoes at the door. No one had told me. The nail polish on one toe was badly chipped. I got resourceful, slipped away to the restroom, and covered that toe with a Band-Aid I had in my purse. I'm glad they were the nude kind and not Mickey Mouse.
I would truly never be able to show my face again! Continuing on with general social advice, LuAnn reminds us "you have to pick and choose your fiestas." Also, with regards to tactical untruths about your plans for an evening, "be careful. You don't want to be caught in a lie. Duck if you see a photographer!" She also provides a list of ideas for hostess gifts, only one of which actually matters at all:
The complete The Real Housewives of New York City on DVD
I absolutely, beyond a shadow of a doubt believe that LuAnn gives people boxed DVD collections of her own reality show as hostess gifts, and I refuse to sway on this issue. A "checklist for the perfect guest" includes tips such as:
Participate enthusiastically in any activities suggested by the host -- party games and singing come to mind.
and
Don't change place cards or seating arrangements at a dinner -- and get caught.
The next chapter focuses on raising well-mannered children, a topic on which LuAnn requires minimal guidance (Victoria, for example, always "[seemed] older than her years"). She does, however, provide a list of "manners for playdates" written directly to a young child -- "Say hello to the adult in charge." -- presumably on the off-chance that a particularly conscientious eight year old might have stumbled into Class with the Countess unawares. How prescient!
The following passage makes me feel particularly sorry for anyone in the wider social circle of LuAnn de Lesseps:
If you can manage to keep gum out of the hands of your children, do it. Bovine chewing is really obnoxious. I was at a party with the daughter of a friend who was chewing away. I could barely stand to be next to her. Gritting my teeth, I said to her, "I don't allow my daughter to chew gum in most places. She just can't handle it. I know all girls do it, but it's better to chew gum in the car alone with the closest of family." Guess what? She took that gum out of her mouth, realizing her chewing was out of control.
If my interest in this book had waned at all, it is instantly restored as I turn the page and am greeted with this image of a sultry LuAnn de Lesseps introducing Part Three: "The Art of Seduction." I'm glad to have someone like LuAnn at the helm of this particular ship, as I'm confident she will share her unedited thoughts on the issues at hand. For instance,
I know this is a controversial statement, but I believe there are not enough Betty Boops in this world.
Revolutionary! As she continues, "when you go to the office, don't look like a man." I appreciate this advice, and have since taken the time to sew a flirty pink tutu around the waistline of my lab coat to more accurately signify my feminine wiles. But of course, before you can seduce and ensnare your target, you must find a man in the first place. Where, you may ask?
Tech shops -- damsel in distress

Long plane trips -- business and first class are the best

Upscale men's stores -- discuss ties
And if you're particularly devoted? "Consider changing your career to urban real estate."
A list of questions to ask yourself "before you make too much of an effort" includes such assorted queries as
Is he truly single?
and
Do you have to fight him for the mirror?
LuAnn goes on to inform us that:
Men are fascinated if you seem to intuit things about them. Maybe knowing his sign in astrology will give you some insight into his character. Know before you go. Google is a lifesaver.
She sprinkles in tidbits about everything from how best to leave after a one-night stand ("You could leave a note -- maybe lipstick on the bathroom mirror" ) to how to break up with someone ("Don't send an e-mail."), to how to handle a breakup with grace ("If you cry, it's okay. There is nothing wrong with making him feel guilty!"). She also recounts a time when she dressed up "like a Moroccan princess" to surprise and seduce her then-husband, the Count, before ending with advice to "leave a trail of candy and lacy lingerie up the stairs and to the boudoir for your husband to find when he returns from a business trip." I'm trying to imagine what my boyfriend would do if he came home, exhausted after a business trip, only to be met by a haphazard trail of goopy, half-melted Twix bars leading down the hallway. I can't imagine it's exactly what LuAnn had in mind.
LuAnn informs us that every morning, as soon as she gets up, she brushes her teeth and applies blush (not blusher this time!) before leaving her bedroom. She adds cryptically, "I think I have French blood -- Canadian, that is." The subsequent advice to "try to do one nice thing a day for your partner" strikes me as vaguely concerning, in the same way as people who describe their ideal partner as "honest." If I get to the point in my relationship where I need a conscious reminder to even attempt to be moderately decent to my partner at least once over the course of a twenty-four hour period, I can only hope I'll admit it's time to throw in the towel. As LuAnn continues, "Every day I try to thank Alex for something, no matter how mundane it might be. He loves it." Shocking, that someone would enjoy having their efforts acknowledged. As always, our Countess is an empath to the extreme.
More advice to keep your man happy? "Don’t criticize him." Presumably ever, under any circumstances, which seems only reasonable to me. LuAnn then suggests treating your partner like a puppy in obedience school, which I'm sure some people find highly erotic:
Make a fuss whenever he does anything thoughtful or romantic. If he sees that something he's done has made you happy, he'll do it again.
The next section begins with the line, "Your partner is not your girlfriend." I can't wait until someone finally tells LuAnn about lesbians!!
She continues with a lesson about how men are simple and practical and women are complicated and hysterical. As we all know:
Most men's idea of torture is having to listen to women chatter away amongst themselves…So don't torment your husband by going on about how you are feeing, why you are angry, or how to deal with a problem in great detail.
I want to snark on this, but honestly, it just makes me sad. Imagine having such terrible men in your life that not a single one has ever listened to you talk about something you love with anything less than utter disdain? If my boyfriend made me think, even for a moment, that it was "torment" to listen to me share my feelings about the day, I would bundle all four of my cats under my arms and bolt right out the door to embrace my inner independent Cat Lady with all appropriate haste. But LuAnn continues:
Men really are different, and it should be that way.
For example:
Forget yoga class. There is a reason the class is filled with women; men can't stretch the way women can.
Unfortunately, I don't think LuAnn is open to hearing a treatise on the plethora of cultural factors that result in certain pastimes being unnecessarily gendered and subsequently diminished under the scrutiny of an inherently sexist society, so I'll save that for another time.
In the book's final chapter, "Seduction Makes the World Go 'Round," LuAnn extends her lessons on charm and temptation beyond the bedroom into the world at large. For example:
When new neighbors move onto our street, I take them a pie to welcome them to the neighborhood. Who does that anymore -- especially in New York?
Classic Countess, am I right?! Underscoring her common, pedestrian roots, she informs us that the reason she is so comfortable around "tradespeople" is because she grew up with a father who was a contractor. She also is apparently only superficially familiar with Abrahamic religious iconography, as the following passage indicates:
Noel used to bring apples to school for his teachers. It's an old-fashioned custom. Think of Adam and Eve!
Why, exactly, we would be thinking of Adam and Eve in the context of thanking an educator remains unclear, at least for those of us who lack the elegance to intuit LuAnn's intentions. LuAnn also officially confirms her place in the Parents-All-Teachers-Despise-With-A-Burning-Fury hall of fame, as she snidely references "the point [in a parent-teacher conference] at which they make some sort of comment that indicates your child is less than perfect." The classy way to respond in this situation is, as we learn, to respond with basic human decency and -- if that fails -- "[talk] to the head of the school."
In a note about childcare, LuAnn remarks that "some nannies are so spoiled it's like having another child." She reiterates:
Remember that she's working for you. Don't cater to her every whim.
That's Mrs. de Lesseps to you, thank you very much!
LuAnn rounds out her guidance about household staff by suggesting that you give "holidays and sick days" and that you consider "[pulling] a flower from an arrangement" for your housekeeper's room. The largesse is truly beyond comprehension.
She then suggests that any of us impoverished ragamuffins who don't have doormen simply "adopt the doorman in a neighboring building for his services," kind of like how in Georgian England, wealthy estate owners used to hire ornamental hermits to live in their gardens and contribute to a general sense of idyllic ambiance.
LuAnn next turns her attention to the decorum around best friends, who she informs us can be "like a therapist, something you should never expect of your husband." Best friends can help you do tons of other things, like "edit your closet." LuAnn promptly segues into a story about a time when she was seated next to Sean Connery at a dinner party, but then rudely forced to switch places by an inconsiderate hostess. Connery, as one might expect, was "baffled and disappointed" by his misfortune. The hostess, as one also might expect, is described generously by LuAnn as "an older women [sic] -- a tad bitter and unhappy."
In the book's final passage, titled "Fund-raising," LuAnn describes her then-husband by saying, "he has a long-term vision that runs in his blood." Given that this particular long-term vision apparently did not turn out to include LuAnn, this seems an inadvertently bleak note on which to end. So we'll soldier on through the Afterword, in which The Countess remarks, "I am really the person you see on the show. The camera doesn't lie." She continues,
If you haven't already learned from watching the [sic] The Real Housewives of New York City, you'll know after having read my book that a countess is no different from anyone else.
In her final paragraph, LuAnn puts out a call for any reader feedback -- "I would love to know what you found helpful in my book and what subjects I didn’t get to that you'd like to hear about." As she tantalizingly teases, "Who knows? I had so much fun writing this book, I just might start another."
We can only hope.

The problem of US military biolaboratory on a global scale
The coronavirus pandemic made the question of its origin relevant. Opinions of the scientific expert and scientific community were divided. Some scientists insist on its natural origin, and some on artificial. Of course, among those who insist on the thesis about the artificial origin of the virus, there are a lot of conspiracy theorists, charlatans, and simply inappropriate personalities. However, even if talk of artificial origin is the result of fiction, this fiction did not arise from scratch. In particular, it is known that the coronavirus itself originated in Wuhan, China, where the military biolaboratory is located.
“Oil into the fire” was also added to various “leaks” about very controversial episodes such as “Event 201” (Eng. Event 201). Recall that in December 2019, Forbes magazine reported that in October 2019, there were expert studies at Johns Hopkins University simulating a pandemic of a certain pulmonary virus, which provokes a lot of deaths, as well as severe economic consequences around the world. Note that the coronavirus epidemic in Wuhan really began in December. That is, the modeling of the world pandemic at Johns Hopkins University began two months before the first signs of the impending world pandemic appeared in China. Regardless of what motives the experts at Johns Hopkins University would be guided by, this situation gave rise to many topics about the artificiality of the new virus. Coronavirus raised the problem of human vulnerability to various infections, including those of artificial origin. So, this immediately raised the question of the development of biological and bacteriological weapons available in the world. And we are talking not only about the possibility of deliberate use of such weapons, but also man-made accidents and accidental leaks from the places of development of such weapons. The United States is one of the countries that is most involved in military-related biological research. On April 22, a press release was published on the website of the US Embassy in Ukraine stating that post-Soviet republics are taking part in United States Department of Defense biosafety programs. (https://ua.usembassy.gov/u-s-ukraine-partnership-to-reduce-biological-threats/) This participation is expressed in the fact that in the territory of the former Soviet republics there are biological laboratories of the American military department.
https://preview.redd.it/l4crv9g9q6951.jpg?width=1160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6ae8e71eabb5ab92fee473b4a574bf630cd6971
Despite the fact that Washington officially declares its good goals (peaceful research and development of vaccines) - representatives of the public and journalists of these countries were worried, although for many years the existence of these laboratories was not a secret. However, against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic, the danger of such “research” has ceased to be something of the category of science fiction. In the early to mid-1990s, the United States developed and began to implement the so-called “Nunn-Lugar program” (named after two senators: Republican Sam Nunn and Democrat Richard Lugar) “Joint threat reduction” (English abbreviation - CTR) . According to the official goals of the authors of the program, the United States was supposed to help reduce the threats (in fact - the disposal) of weapons of mass destruction. The nuclear missile component is best known in this regard. However, this also applied to other components, including chemical, biological, and bacteriological components. According to official documents, the Nunn-Lugar program suggested four ways of working to reduce the threat of weapons of mass destruction: disposal; collection of information on availability and quantity; increasing the transparency of those parts of the armed forces of post-Soviet countries that have in their arsenal the corresponding types of weapons; cooperation in order to protect against falling into the hands of third-party weapons of mass destruction. In fact, such a program assumed the establishment of soft American control over the relevant arsenals. As for the biological and bacteriological arsenals of weapons, the Nunn-Lugar program covered Ukraine, Georgia, Tajikistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Kazakhstan. If we consider the situation in the country aspect, then we can distinguish the following. In 2011, the Richard Lugar Public Health Center was opened in Georgia (located 17 kilometers from Tbilisi). Moreover, among the goals pursued is the study of dangerous bioagents (including anthrax and tularemia) and viruses (including such dangerous ones as Congo-Crimean fever). Organizationally, these studies are conducted under the auspices of the Pentagon Medical Research Connection, in which both Georgian and American specialists work. Moreover, American specialists have diplomatic immunity, and on the territory of the center itself there are zones inaccessible to Georgian citizens.
In September 2018, the former Minister of State Security of Georgia Igor Giorgadze said that they could conduct experiments on people in the laboratory and presented documents from which it followed that dozens of people undergoing treatment in the center of Lugar died. Moreover, biologists from three private American firms - CH2M Hill, Battelle and Metabiota, who fulfill Pentagon orders, worked there. Giorgadze drew attention to the high level of bacteriological protection of the laboratory. Moreover, the center has “equipment for spraying harmful substances and ammunition with biologically active material”. “Why does an institution whose goal is to protect the population have such things?” - the ex-minister wondered. It is important to note that after the laboratory was opened in Abkhazia and the Krasnodar Territory of the Russian Federation adjacent to Georgia, the presence of atypical insects began to be recorded. Outbreaks of Congo-Crimean fever were also noted, the causes of which remained unknown. The territory of Armenia accommodates 12 biological laboratories. Moscow and Yerevan have been discussing for a long time the possible signing of an agreement on cooperation in the field of biological research, which may open up access for Russian experts to US laboratories operating in Armenia. But here the key word is possible. Washington is in every way opposed to this. In Ukraine, experts count up to 25 biological laboratories. Their appearance dates back to 2005, when after the Orange Revolution and the coming to power of Viktor Yushchenko, an agreement was reached between the US Department of Defense and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, according to which the Ukrainian side was obliged to transmit information about dangerous pathogens to Washington. The main conductor of the US biological program in the Ukrainian direction is the "Scientific and Technological Center in Ukraine" (STCU). Its employees also enjoy diplomatic immunity. Outbreaks of cholera and hepatitis A of unknown origin were detected in Ukraine in 2011, 2014 and 2017. In 2013, an American reference laboratory appeared in Azerbaijan, which is engaged in the study of pathogenic microorganisms in humans and animals. In Kazakhstan, in 2016, the Central Reference Laboratory was opened. According to the Kazakh-American agreements, the Kazakh Scientific Center for Quarantine and Zoonotic Infections named after M. Aykimbayev became a kind of base for this laboratory. As a result of the interaction, the Americans are implementing a program to organize research on priority topics of infectious diseases of animals and agricultural production systems. These activities are part of the US-promoted One Health program, which includes the study of the relationship between animal, human, and environmental health.
There are 10 reference laboratories in Uzbekistan, the first of which appeared in 2007. American specialists were able to get to the previously secret chemical facilities of the former USSR in Uzbekistan, to which they still do not have access on the territory of the Russian Federation. In May 2002, on the Renaissance Island in the Aral Sea, as part of the US Joint Threat Reduction program, an operation was carried out with the participation of American specialists to destroy anthrax spores remaining from Soviet times. This is the first time Washington has conducted such an operation abroad. Later, a team of specialists from various departments was sent from Tashkent with the aim of epidemiological and epidemiological intelligence. Since 2004, Washington has been participating in Tashkent's creation of an effective system for controlling the spread of infectious diseases as part of a joint program for cooperation in the field of biology (PSOP). The main executor is the US Department of Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). On the territory of Uzbekistan, the institution participating in the program promoted by Washington is the Republican Center for the Prevention of Plague, Quarantine and Highly Infectious Infections of the Ministry of Health. The PSOB provides for the implementation of a set of measures in Uzbekistan aimed at strengthening the republic’s potential in the detection, diagnosis, analysis and safe storage of strains of pathogens of especially dangerous diseases (plague, anthrax, tularemia and brucellosis). The program objective is the elimination of equipment and infrastructure inherited from the Soviet Union used in the development of biological weapons. A network of bacteriological laboratories has been created in Tajikistan. The main bases are Dushanbe, Sughd and Khatlon regions. To summarize the above, it turns out: 1. Part of the countries in which the laboratories are located are countries with extremely tense internal situations - Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Tajikistan. 2. Some countries — Ukraine, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan — are either suppliers to various countries, including European ones, of labor migrants, or transit countries for them (Kazakhstan). 3. The presence in the list of these countries of Kazakhstan is also interesting in the Chinese context. After all, this territory can be used to provoke a worsening of the epidemiological situation in China. Thus, from their territory it is possible to strike at unfriendly US territories (first of all, to provoke a worsening of the epidemiological situation), and to provoke a worsening of relations between the respective countries using the “epidemiological argument”. All of the above implies the conduct of military biological research without regard to American public opinion and virtually nonexistent international law. We can talk about the artificial elimination of pathogens aimed at defeating a specific genotype, animal world or population of a certain territory (for example, ethnicity). Summing up the brief results, there is every reason to believe that the US military and biological activities threaten the national interests of most countries of the world. And if so, it is necessary to take collective, coordinated and preemptive measures prohibiting the activities of military biologists of third countries on the territory of other states. Exchange of data on this issue may be of interest to all states that have already faced a new challenge and found themselves face to face in the matter of confronting information attacks by the United States and its satellites.

Georgian opposition forces continue to adhere to the vector of changing current government
https://preview.redd.it/76sh90833l851.jpg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d16b456a2f0867db06eaead964102108ea6bb313
Georgia is a unitary republic of parliamentary type, respectively, the head of the country is the prime minister.
Moreover, the president, as the head of the executive branch, in accordance with the constitution, is the supreme commander of the Georgian defense forces, the country's highest representative in foreign relations, ensures the unity and integrity of the country. In 2018, Salome Zurabishvili was elected as president.
The legislative power of the country is represented by a unicameral parliament consisting of 150 deputies (77 deputies are elected by lists, 73 from single-member districts. They are elected for a term of four years on the basis of universal suffrage).
As a result of the recent parliamentary elections held in 2016, political forces supporting former President Mikheil Saakashvili (the United National Movement party) suffered another defeat, and Bidzina Ivanishvili’s political party, Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia, won the majority of seats in parliament. (115 places out of 150).
The current situation does not suit the opposition very much, and therefore, at the beginning of the next electoral cycle, a tough struggle unfolded to change the rules of the game.
After the world-famous so-called “Gavrilov’s night”, from June 20, 2019, the opposition launched an information campaign to force the country's leadership to adopt amendments to switch to a proportional election system and reduce public support for the ruling party “Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia”.
After much disagreement and protests on March 8, 2020, in Tbilisi, at the residence of the US ambassador in Georgia, with the participation of US diplomatic representatives, a meeting was held between the leadership of the ruling party “Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia” and the united opposition, following which a memorandum on the format of the electoral model was signed .
The document provides for an increase in the number of deputy mandates from 77 to 120 and a decrease in the number of majority mandates from 73 to 30 (the opposition proposed 20), as well as an even distribution of majoritarian constituencies in accordance with the decision of the Constitutional Court.
Given the adoption of the changes, the winning party cannot form a government if it receives less than 40% of the vote. The barrier to parliamentary passage for a political union will be 1% of the vote.
Unlike the existing system, the distribution of seats in the parliament between parties will be calculated according to the new formula, which suggests focusing on the results of proportional elections.
So, a party or bloc, in case of victory in all majoritarian districts, will be able to receive only one fourth more mandates following the results of elections than they are supposed to receive based on the results of proportional elections. If after calculating the results of the mandates the party or bloc will have more than the established limit, then they will be distributed among other parties and blocs that have overcome the electoral threshold.
The opposition is confident that the ruling “Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia” will not be able to overcome this threshold, and proceed from the results of studies by foreign, mainly American, non-governmental organizations that record a decrease in public confidence in the current government, and at the same time “solid support results” for opponents of the "Georgian Dream".
Due to the state of emergency introduced in the country caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the active phase of the political struggle was suspended.
It should be noted that in the context of the fight against the pandemic, the actions of the Georgian government did not cause any particular complaints from the majority of the population and many former opponents of the “Georgian Dream”, and the measures taken by the government had only an approving attitude.
Along with this, the opposition forces continue to adhere to the vector of changing the current government. Another “attack” was the accusation of the country's leadership of violating the constitution and creating the prerequisites for establishing the dictatorship of the ruling party.
The reason was the adoption by Parliament on May 22 of amendments to the Law on Public Health, which vested the government with the right to establish restrictions in the country in the event of a pandemic or epidemic without imposing a state of emergency.
In addition to the existing processes, Washington has a special influence on the election environment through controlled non-governmental organizations (NGOs), of which there are over 50 in Georgia.
These associations are implementing projects whose stated goals are the protection of human rights, the struggle for equality and the provision of humanitarian assistance. The true intentions are to regulate the process of making state decisions, conduct campaigning in the interests of disseminating ideas and values that demonstrate the advantage of the western path of development. One of the most influential organizations is the US Agency for International Development, which coordinates the activities of pro-American NGOs.
Along with this in the conditions of folding.

2020.06.29 18:40 Bearfoot8 Announcing "Condor Station": A New Highly-Dynamic Air Superiority Mission for the F-14 + Supercarrier

Folks , I would like to share with you a mission that I have developed for the F-14 and the supercarrier. The mission can be downloaded from [the ED DCS User Files section](https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3310651/) and there is a [forum post](https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=4404619) about it too.
The brief description is:
A highly-dynamic and always changing air-to-air combat DCS mission for the F-14 Tomcat (and friends). Operating off the "Big Stick" (CVN-71, the USS Theodore Roosevelt; Supercarrier module needed) in the Black Sea, your primary mission is BARCAP (Barrier Combat Air Patrol) on "CONDOR" station, over the Kolkheti Plain and Gori Valley region of Georgia. Your objective is to protect Georgian and NATO air and ground transport from air attacks carried out by Abkhazia (and possibly Russia) who are trying to enforce a non-UN sanctioned "no-fly"/"no-drive" zone over Georgia. You have full authorization to engage and fire upon any confirmed non-friendly aircraft in Georgian airspace, but be careful not to violate Russian or Abkhazian territorial boundaries. In the event of an attack against the carrier battle group, you are to immediately switch tasking to carrier defense, and intercept and shoot down aircraft and/or missiles threatening the carrier.

Hello, I'm Rule Britannia Lead Tiberium, and I'm proud to finally get out our first dev diary! We have been perfectionists about our content, not wanting to mislead or disappoint, so with many cuts and revisions we have finally belted this out for you. Of course, the current pandemic and other commitments have been a drain on our productivity, but we hope this will reinvigorate the community.
Preface aside, this will mark the first Rule Britannia progress report, specifically about Britain's position in the mod. As it is the foundation on which the mod lies, it is by far the most important nation although one of the most absurd due to its surreal circumstances. As such our lore descriptions will be limited in scope due to how impossible of a task it is to summarize it with our current workforce.
(note: read the events if you want more context! They are designed to be enjoyable to read, but are not required to understand the PR!)
PREMISE:
Britain, like in our timeline, was empowered by the events of the Glorious Revolution. However, instead of abandoning his Dutch ambitions, William III chose instead to ally his homeland with his new domain, leading to absolute naval hegemony and great profits. With Whigs dominant in Parliament, absolutism in Britain appeared to be on its way out. In addition, Britain masterfully defeated France in the War of Spanish Succession, like it did in our timeline. From here, the Empire would only gain strength as it squashed any other European power in consecutive wars until the present start-date. Due to the entrenched Whig parliament, the Jacobite uprisings of the 1740s never occurred, and remained a peaceful movement among some High Tories, and consequently the Highland Clearances in Scotland were never carried out. The 1700s remained prosperous, with continental affairs continuing the pattern of victories for the Empire and its allies. When the 13 Colonies and Canadian provinces revolted in the 1770s due to the rising tax rates and presence of Enlightenment liberalism, they were quickly crushed by the government after concessions were promised in exchange for their loyalty. This would eventually morph into the Commonwealth of North America, as seen in 1936.
The 1800s would see this era of dominance continue. When the French revolution sparked after rising bread prices and royal incompetence wrecked the French economy, Britain was swift to intervene and established an occupational government after several years of fighting which restored the Bourbon monarchy, along with coalition allies Prussia and Austria. After Spain joined France for a brief period, it was forced to concede California, Florida, and the Louisiana territory previously ceded from France. From here, Britain continued to expand its mighty empire through all corners of the Earth, soundly defeating France several more times, the upstart Prussian giant, the Ottoman Empire, Spain with its ally Portugal, Russia, and even the mighty Qing empire. Clearly, it was poised for world domination.
However, throughout all of this time, Parliament generally held the sway with the reigning monarchs preferring to delegate responsibilities to a trusted Prime Minister. Whigs and Tories, Liberals, and eventually Labour would all hold some importance, but one Prime Minister greatly altered the paradigm. Cecil Rhodes, a mining tycoon throughout Katanga, Zambezia, Bechuanaland, and the Cape had successfully clinched the Liberal leadership in the late 19th century. With his long premiership, he had defeated the Prussians, established the Commonwealth of Nations, and greatly restored the prominence of the then-reigning Victoria in Parliament, as he believed the Empire required a strong leader to guide it through the complexities of diplomacy, economics, and warfare without political squabbles interfering. This "Rhodes System" would define British politics until the start of the mod, which is why the nobility is much more prominent in-game.
As such, this is all we will say regarding lore for now. Our main focuses are quality, gameplay, and entertainment rather than lore and narrative, at least at the moment, hence the lack of emphasis.
THE STARTING SITUATION:
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland is the global hegemon. Present on every continent, in every sea, and all across the skies, Britain is undoubtedly perceived as invincible. King George V Windsor (formerly Hannover-Saxe-Coburg-Gotha before anti-Prussian sentiments necessitated a change) has been one of its most popular monarchs, much like his grandmother Victoria. Soundly beating Mexico and several other belligerents, he gained praise for his wartime leadership. In addition, he remained scandal-free unlike many of his relatives. Sympathetic to the issues of the common man and woman, but also exceptional at dealing with higher society, he is perceived as a model Briton.
However, his health is very much so in decline, at an impressive 70 years and ailing. He himself fears for the future, considering the beliefs of his eldest son Edward and the untimely death of his other son, Albert, in Mexico. Plus, Albert Victor, his disgraced brother, presides over India and yearns to return from his informal exile. Clearly, soon as he dies, Britain will face some political turmoil. Fortunately, however, his good friend the Viscount Hailsham, Douglas Hogg, is an experienced career politician who is known to handle any situation tactfully. A Tory but also a friend of many Labour and Liberal peers, he is the uniter Britain would call upon after the absence of its powerful monarch. Regardless of intrigue, the Empire seems to face a prosperous future ahead in the eyes of many.
https://imgur.com/jcrrFqf (intro event)
https://imgur.com/ZG8Kvpl (starting political screen)
Britain starts of course, with George V. His Majesty's Prime Minister, Douglas Hogg can be seen in an experimental GUI to the right.
Several national spirits mark what Britain has going for it, such as the expensive (and ongoing!) Anglo-Mexican War. Expected to be a quick victory, Mexico put up a strong resistance and fought with guerilla tactics in the Sierra Madre highlands and in its many deserts and jungles. In the May Offensive of 1931, even the Duke of York Albert was killed in action after Mexican mortars opened up deep behind enemy lines. As such, it remains a quagmire for the British armed forces used to naval supremacy and an accompanying naval invasion that'd quickly neuter the weakened opponent's forces. In the future, Britain will have to determine a strategy to avoid financial decay and finally vanquish the rebels.
The next national spirit is simply a buff resulting from the popular rule of the King.
The next national spirit is a debuff that signifies unrest in Ireland, due to the events following the disastrous famine of the 1840s and the continued Anglo dominance over land and rights within the Emerald Isle. As Britain's foremost domestic issue, you will have to debate whether Home Rule will keep Ireland content or whether other solutions are necessary.
The next spirit is the mod's namesake, well partially, "Britannia Rules the Waves", a sign of Britain's impregnable naval superiority which it holds over the rest of the world. Two steps above gunboat diplomacy, Britain is able to preserve its holdings and ensure domestic protection with its powerful armada sailing the seven seas.
Finally, the last national spirit is the sidelined parliament. It indicates Britain's rubber-stamp Westminster system that fails to accomplish anything more than it needs to, with the Coalition for the King largely dominant. While some Tories, Liberals, and Labour MPs have declined the label of the coalition, it is by no doubt the party which enables the enlightened absolutism present to this day. Composed of absolutists, aristocrats (despotic ideology), and Rhodians (formerly administrationist ideology), the Coalition for the King ensures a streamlined legislative process for the Empire.
THE DEATH OF KING GEORGE V:
Unfortunately, the Georgian era would not last forever. Meeting his tragic demise during the early hours of January 20th, 1936, George V passed away in his sleep.

https://imgur.com/yCu0FML
Britain's people went into several days of mourning. An inspirational and upstanding man met his Lord, leaving his people behind for eternity. Many did not know what the future held without the King and former Crown Prince at the helm of the ship christened Britannia. However, Edward's coronation would bring times of joy and youth to the mournful public.
https://imgur.com/MVXMsef
EDWARD REX
https://imgur.com/Ve9cp8q
https://imgur.com/5v3cqjG
Parliament was quick to secure an effective transition from George to Edward. With some last-minute rituals, mourning, and commemorations, Edward was ready for his reign.
King Edward, with all of his controversies, was a welcome sight to the public. The decrepit George V deserved rest, and his son seemed eager to take the crown to restore Britain's political processes. His coronation was cast to be a great event that anyone could attend at Westminster Abbey. After all was said and done, the audience roared with applause, knowing that the young man would preside over decades of prosperity. After all, he had a comfortable parliamentary majority to work with and an excellent government.
https://imgur.com/kdzQ0mE
As part of his goodwill missions following coordination, King Edward was due to have a dinner with several prominent British businessmen in order to set a good fiscal policy for the upcoming year. Unfortunately, tragedy would strike once more. This time, a regicide.
https://imgur.com/HlDLvDN
While the police were quick to take down the suspect, things would only begin to get worse.
https://imgur.com/u84XAi0
https://imgur.com/dRqfizh
Now with both the victim left mangled on the ground and the assassin dead, the case appears to be hitting a dead end just as soon as it had begun. Parliament, with the backing of the outraged public, immediately chooses to launch an investigation into the double assassinations and their motives. (This will be covered more specifically at a later point.)
In addition to the investigation and the outrage following the shooting of the recently crowned King, there now lies a succession crisis. While it should logically go from George V, then to Prince of Wales Edward, then to Duke of York Albert, then to Duke of Gloucester Henry, an issue arises with the question of Albert Victor. Albert Victor, the disgraced brother of George V, was forced to abandon the throne. However, as he never signed an abdication decree in concordance with British law, some scholars maintain that he should be returned to the throne. With this dispute, it has officially become a succession crisis, with even some foreign houses staking a claim. This unprecedented political turmoil would prove to be a nightmare in no time.
HERE ENTERS THE SUCCESSION CRISIS:
https://imgur.com/jppruIE
Pictured is the succession crisis tree, which coincides with the investigation. In conjunction with the investigation, you will be able to pick a side to choose depending on who is found to be the most untrustworthy (was Albert Victor's status as Viceroy of India the means necessary for an assassin to kill Edward) or was it Henry (who had an Irishman kill the King for patriotic reasons)? As such, this basic decision will compromise the rest of the tree's design.
https://imgur.com/IVhiAnn
https://imgur.com/6w3yJYR (excuse the January 1st, it's a debugging date, it would be approximately June or so in a game)
The main decision you will be able to take is who will succeed Hogg. You are able to either select the Marquess of Salisbury (James Gascoyne-Cecil), a conservative or the Viscount Simon, (John Simon), a man who considers himself more of a reformer. This decision will be a crucial part of future Britain gameplay as you decide the future of parliament.
https://imgur.com/O8p1vxZ
https://imgur.com/Fg3aHEw
THE REFORMERS:
https://imgur.com/fBQMYy2
HENRY:
https://imgur.com/tb8GsM6
Henry, the Duke of Gloucester, is the son of the late King George V and the brother of Edward. While he is no revolutionary nor a republican, he is by far the mainstream candidate most Britons would prefer. Kind-hearted, polite, and generally cast in a mold akin to his father, Henry will be the safest choice as well. He is eager to liberalize the franchise, restore some of parliament's integrity, and can shore up the Coalition as he implements some of his minor reforms to labor, finance, and colonial affairs.
https://imgur.com/6YetX9Y
He strives to stake his claim as the most legitimate and as the best option available, and portrays himself as a stable, moral, and credible choice to deliver the solutions to Britain's problems.
https://imgur.com/k0GN3tB
Henry also seeks to carry on the legacy of his deceased father, in an effort to, of course, drive up the sympathy of the British public to his potential reign.
https://imgur.com/9yNKmuH
Of course, Henry also meets with working-class individuals and other members of general society to break the mold of court affairs, as he wishes to be a true man of the people, like Richard Lionheart of yore.
https://imgur.com/NAcHONf
Nonetheless, the public are not his sole ally. Most of his family support him as well, much to the disgust of Albert Victor, who spends his time "campaigning" for the crown while Parliament debates deeming Henry an usurper and a fraud. If Albert Victor is successful in these rumors, Henry may be discounted or even arrested as Parliament eliminates him from the running.
GEORGE:
https://imgur.com/e5JYt8z
The Duke of Kent, George is the younger brother of the aforementioned Henry. Deeply more committed to reform, he is also substantially more uncertain as a contender. Suspected to be prone to scandals himself, George is viewed with caution as a youthful dreamer rather than as a serious contender.
https://imgur.com/7JIvslr
However, he shocks many in the public when he takes bold steps to start where his brother left off. Quickly establishing himself as a contender, he gladly takes interviews and advocates for sweeping liberalizing reforms on a deeper scale than his elder sibling.
https://imgur.com/OFBKAPy
His connections with the roaring high society of the time also serve him well, as the children of Britain's elite gladly drink with him and discuss politics. It is quite clear that some MPs are swayed to his side for this very reason.
MARY:
https://imgur.com/Uj7NMkk
However, the Duke of Kent is not the only contender emerging from Henry's ashes. Princess Mary, the Countess of Harewood and Lady Mountbatten, she and her husband have made a name for themselves politically before the beginning of the crisis.
https://imgur.com/CIovI13
This husband of hers specifically, Lord Mountbatten, has made a name for himself along with Mary within Fabian circles in British political clubs. The Fabian society serves as Britain's foremost socialist organization, which simultaneously tacitly supports the Empire and the monarchy. However, there is no doubt that Mary is the most radical option.
https://imgur.com/oRgbZFr
She will advocate for social democratic policies much like those of Labour, which many suspect to be the fault of her husband. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that she has her own agenda...
Overall, George and Mary will work together for their shared desire for reform, but ultimately, one of them will decide amongst themselves who will take the reformist caucus.
https://imgur.com/avK4upm
https://imgur.com/Ndl9GJI
THE CONSERVATIVES:
https://imgur.com/vo787Kg
ALBERT VICTOR:
https://imgur.com/r5uydS8
The estranged eldest son of Edward VII, Albert Victor was forced into an informal exile and abdication due to a myriad of factors ranging from his marriage to allegations of homosexuality. A sickly man from the years of media pressure, he is present at game start as India's Viceroy, finally being able to make a name for himself besides that of tabloid headlines.
https://imgur.com/NZRYeWb
His return to home shocks many, as it was the first time he had returned to the homeland since his departure decades ago. This repatriation would reinforce the scholars' claim that Britain may very well have manipulated Albert Victor out of his rightful throne. A theme which would define his upcoming campaign of sorts.
https://imgur.com/wXXdDMQ
https://imgur.com/Okp8KMw
https://imgur.com/t5Ka0q3
There is no doubt Albert Victor is proper with conservatives. Edward and Albert had fought valiantly, but the other siblings had been idle within the homefront, especially after the death of Albert. Meanwhile, Albert Victor had crushed dissent within his Indian realms and established an effective colonial bureaucracy ultimately subservient to him. Careful to carry the support of industrialists, aristocrats, and other elements of society who preferred the status quo and the Rhodes system, Albert Victor made quick work forming alliances and endorsements. However, it would be incorrect to say that Albert Victor fails to attract the middle and lower classes, when he very much so can draw on nationalistic sentiment to carry his message of normalcy.
https://imgur.com/q4OWCRg
His record is also something he displays proudly, with medals adorning his uniform. His wife serves as a diplomatic marriage in addition to his affection, and his previous leadership serves to reinforce his message of vast credentials to rule.
However, Albert Victor is a shady individual. With his domains of several hundred million, it is very possible for him to have obtained the funds or equipment necessary to carry out the assassination of his brother. Only the investigation will tell...until it decides against him!
NIKOLAUS:
https://imgur.com/5nWTzdR
Nikolaus, Prince of Oldenburg, serves as the Dutch ruler at gamestart. Fervently imperialistic and admiring of nationalistic movements, Nikolaus' argument lies upon a crux of militarism and their support to rule.
https://imgur.com/1ektf5B
https://imgur.com/dBRlgfM
His message resounds loudly with the military itself, entangled in the seemingly eternal Mexican "swamp". With a campaign to expand enlisted outreach with interviews and inspections, Nikolaus also can rely on the remnants of Albert Victor's conservative bloc and the endorsement of Douglas Haig, the famed General who had presided over the invasion of Anatolia and its subsequent occupation. With this small but loyal base, it is very possible for Nikolaus to cause an upset.
https://imgur.com/7bdC7v4
Nikolaus is not alone in his bid to reclaim Britain's conservative legacy, strangely enough.
DUARTE:
https://imgur.com/6mnvNJG
Duarte Nuno de Braganza, a relative of King Luis currently reigning in the Lusitanian nation has staked a claim to the throne albeit a very loose one. By far the most outrageous of the candidacies, he seeks to uplift the United Kingdom's Catholics and establish a true monarchy. Many suspect him to be a Portuguese plant in order to preserve the 1373 alliance in the face of adversity, others suspect him to be outright delusional.
https://imgur.com/WrR3H53
Duarte proposes a simple but bizarre platform for the nation: mending the status of Catholics. This serves to directly oppose Nikolaus' Protestant convictions ironically, even though both are the most conservative choices. His detractors call him a crypto-Jacobite, but many see him as a man with a legitimate interest in healing the wounds present in Ireland.
https://imgur.com/qrVv0fa
In addition to his almost militant Catholicism, Duarte draws upon his leadership in Portugal to reassure Britain that he has more policies. With growing apathy in society as the crisis drags on, Duarte begins to establish himself as a very credible choice to juke the establishment's grip on society, perhaps he may even break the Rhodes system!
CONCLUSION:
While focus trees are lacking, and the investigation a seeming side note, we hope this premise will effectively set up how RB will play out. As such, we will generously answer questions on our subreddit and in our Discord's ask-a-dev channel. Ironically, Britain was one of the last countries to receive a "game plan" due to how unique its premise is. I think this serves to effectively lay down a foundation for future progress reports and hint at our future content, which we hope to deliver weekly once more, as most of our energy has gone into writing the events.
Hopefully you enjoyed it all, and I would like to thank all the Team Members who helped deliver!
